Got 2 stereo options for the tech 1 sport-

1 is a blaupunkt memphis that will be here in the next few days
also have a pop out cassette holder handbreak console bit

it has an aux in, although for my ipod- will mean a lead from stereo to ipod, and also ipod- charger cigg lighter , plus no proper ipod functiion obviously

also..i have a superb pioneer bluettooth, ipod, unit, which is nice amger lights, remote control, proper ipod connection and can select songs etc via the remote

what im wondering, and its only an idea..

put the blaupunkt in, and the cassete holder, to look oem superb with a selection of original 80s cassetes in the holder

and maybe using a spare glove box i have, to build a custom thing holding the pioneer bluetooth unit and the ipod, with some sort of pul type thing, to easily take out the whole glove box and dissconect it easily, ie just unscrew the glove box, dissconect a plug, and put the oem glove box in

and a switch, to switch between units somewhere

is it hard/easy to wire it in like that ? i know might be a bit complicated to try myself, but i need a complete new stereo wiring set up anyway, and am getting a pro to do it

anyone else ever had a set up like that ? or is it not worth the aggro ?

i want the blaupunkt in and the cassetes for 80s  , but not sure i want the aggro of the leads etc, and would like the ipod available and the remote etc aswell as the hands free calling

appriciate any views, or also things that ive not thought about ie any cons etc in doing this or reasons why it wont/cant work or anything ?

tbh i have no idea if il do it, or how difficult it would be to do ? hence the post, just mulling over options, but if it could be done it would cater for all needs , and save me having a nice head unit i love , not being used or to sell it , although the sport will not be a daily driver and garaged from october , so might put the unit in my daily car an d keep the sport 80s original with the blaupunkt

Could just extend the wires from the headunit area down to the glovebox to the original plug, it wouldn't be too hard to manufacture it in there i'd have though.

Theres a socket at the back of the glovebox that allows a slim socket to be plugged which is for the stereo - it has the earth, positive and ignition - which is used for the stereo.

With regards to having two stereos - it can be done by putting on 2 connectors on the end of the wire ive just mentioned to provide power.

You will also need to do the same for the speaker inputs which will then need to have a switch on speaker inputs to know where it should be getting the music from.

Personally I wouldnt put 2 stereos in like that - just get one decent one, just make sure you dont butcher the wiring and use the iso connectors, so you can easily revert back to having your original blapunkt.

thats what i thought, when had the alarm fitted he had glove box off etc and we pulled the stereo out, in the car at mo is a kenwood turn round front thing , he said the wiring is cowboy and it appears the proper stereo loom bit is missing/or wasnt one on there as its an old car, there was an emty plug there, he said find out if there should be a loom bit

do you know- would that loom bit and plug, be the same from a 1990 318is, and a 1987 325i ? ..as i have the is breaker and can take it from that, i do want to get it all proper in the sport and the blaupunkt in on proper connections etc all as original as possible

I would just go with the pioneer!!!!!!!

I thought about sticking a nice cassette player back in one of mine for a bit 'cos I've got loads of tape packs lying about.
Thing is, the tapes will break at some point, possibly ruining the unit - and it'll most likely sound naff!!!
Any tapes you wanna hear, just get on MP3!!!!!!!!

Cassette h/u is for the nice oem look, in something that isn't driven much!!!

You can see the loom in this picture - to the right of the really big connector - its the first long connector with 4 wires coming off it - could say in the middle of them wires.

The picture below is of a 318i, and I have a 325i convertible and there the same connectors.

Hope it helps.

i know what your saying, but i hear the blaupunkt have superb sound quality ? dont get me wong i wont use the tapes in it on a regular basis, more just for show, so they do/will work if need be, i dont ever even use cd`s , its all ipod, and it does have an aux in the front which is why i got the memphis , so 99% of the time will be used with an ipod plugged in the aux

all sounds like a monumental amount of fannying about.

My advice, fit the modern stereo you want, when you need to serve the car up to some paedo type and it needs to be all OEM bufty like, replace with the old snotter headunit.

thing is.. in october it will be garaged, until say march, 4 whole months , and from then it wont be a daily car, il be using my ford , so il propbably put the pioneer in that as it will be used more

whilst on the subject, can anyone recomend any really good speakers ? want something a bit classy with real nice sound, not overly expensive but a bit better than £30 a set sort of ones

I've thought about this before. I want to keep a proper original 80's blaupunkt and wire the aux input to an ipod dock fitted in the ashtray. So when the ashtray is closed, the interior looks original, then just flip it open and dock your ipod.

Modern head units look crap on the E30 dash.

that is another idea...

with the memphis, its a front aux in, if it all works niceley and sounds good with the ipod- is it easy to open it up, and wire it from inside-for the aux wire to come out the back of the unit, across in to the glove box , and connect the ipod there ? and same with the charger and wire it so it can be permanent charged/powered ? , that would be a winner to keep the ipod and all wiring in the glove box out of sight, rather than a cig charger and aux lead on the dash area

It should be really easy to do that. Just open the unit and solder a flying lead to the back of the aux in so you have a 3.5mm jack socket hanging out of the back of the headunit. Then for the charger, simply wire a second lighter socket behind the dash and plug your ipod power into that. Just make sure it's wired to a switched live or it will end up flattening your battery.

nice one, i dont know anything about wiring etc, il get the fella who did my alarm to do it all, but that sounds like the best soloution , and put the pioneer in my daily car and get a lot of use out of that

so if it had a wire wires from the aux going out the rear, would the front aux in still stay functional all ok ?

It should work fine, but you may have minor issues with sound quality or volume if you have a source plugged into each aux at the same time.

Here's what you want:-

http://www.raysmith.co.uk/secretaudio-s ... ystem.html

Bung your Blaupunkt in the dash and wire it up so it lights up. Hide this somewhere and operate it via the remote control.

Or just buy a nice Becker that looks great and does everything you want.

quality is crap in them , plus i dont want all the wire aggro - a tape adapter, charger for ipod etc all cluttering up the dash area

i do have an itrip thing that also charges an ipod, and tunes in to the radio freq, i use in my discovery, they "do" , but they arnt amazing, but also another option

tbh- the blaupunkt, with a hidden wired in charger for ipod going in the glove box and a wire in to the aux going from glove box-back of stereo, is the best soloution i think ,il be happy with that, all il have to do is open the glove box and select the playlist on the ipod, hopefully the blaupunkt will be delivered in the morning and il get it in the dash to see how it looks and post pics

i do really want the tape player and working , and a selection of original 80s tapes in the pop out tape console, think it will look super
