Ive been looking at the pics of all your cars - and Ive just noticed that the heat shields on top of your exhaust manifolds are all black and look solid. Mine are made of some soft material that when I prod it just holes - oops

are these aftermarket? If so what performance gains can I expect? 30 - 40 bhp? :D

No really, where do you get them? I need new ones

Cheers

Here's the part number you need 11621728489, assuming you have an M20. Don't know the price from the dealers but it can't be much.

You mean the manifold gaskets ?
If so I don't think they would increase the bhp, they are standard aren't they ?
I got my set new fom ebay for a tenner

Not gaskets, heat shields to protect the plugs. Number 6.

They come as one part (actually 2, one for every three cilinder exit), as in your picture, unless I am missing something... I actually have the picture of the ones I got...

My bad  . Doug, yours are probably the same but may have turned to mush due to previous oil leaks?

Be warned, don't replace the gaskets unless you really need to as the exhaust studs can break/shear off and cause major probs.

Or get a garage to do it and then its their problem if one snaps but you still might have a hefty bill for them to fix it ?

!si, señor Pinilla!

I had to replace a couple of the studs on mine, they were definately only pence. I had a real result, I ordered 3 and the guy just gave me the whole pack of 20!!
How many do you need?

don't know yet, by the age of them -18 years- I would say all! but I don't want to sound pesimistic... I am replacing it this weekend with a friend of mine fingers crossed, I would buy them off you if they are for sale (must be quick before someone else reads your post !) :)

Well I replaced all 12 of mine seeing as I had them in the end. I should have 8 left (but then who knows what's in my bits and bobs box)
I'll have a look in the morning and let you know, I wouldn't have the audacity to charge you for them!!!
I'll pm you.

Sorry to hijack the original thread guys.

That is quite generous of you Dan, I would pay you a pint if I could, and I accept the offer -the postage will probably cost you more than the actual bolts now I think about it...
I wil have to clarify the price with the stealers in any case as I would need to complete the set, I have been there a few times and they should be careful with the quotes they give around !!
good spanish though
Hasta luego !

They double up as a heat shield and gasket, I was putting this job off on my touring for about a year, when I finally decided to do it, oh how easy it was!! This isn't always the case though :?

JOSEMI, I think you're dealer is having a laugh at you!

For the last MOT - apparently The exhaust had some welding done on it, I m wondering if it may be worth replacing the manifold at the same time as the back box was replaced last year.

Any recomendations guys? Better to get aftermarket? Ive heard people talking about two or 3 piece systems - which is original I assume original is three piece?

I would check myself but there is currently a river running under my car... The Joys of living in Scotland :)

Did you guys manage to take the bolts off without problems ?? Or is there anything to prepare them like adding some lubricant to the bolts to unlock them... I am just not happy with the idea of them snaping off and ending up with a mess, the ones in my car look welded to the studs

prior to attempting removal its a good idea to spray some WD40( or similar) on the studs for a few days/weeks/years , anything to make the job easier is worth a little prep dude

I find that removing the manifold when the engine is hot is the best method, yeah it may burn you a couple of times but there really is far less chance of a stud snapping, more likely to wind the nut/stud combo out of the head, which is a bonus anyways

good luck dude, just make sure and NOT use copper nuts when replacing them, std M8 nuts will be fine, and will actually come off easy next time around

Thanks for your answer Ant, much appreciated - I didn't use WD-40 before as I wasn't sure if it would cause it to burn or something...
Are standard bolts going to stand the heat, I thought that the original were made of copper for that reason ?
