MOT info,cut and pasted job........
MOTs are a necessary but potentially expensive evil, especially when some garages try to pull the wool over your eyes by billing you for repairs that you have no clue about. Yet thereÔš's a sneaky way to avoid these possible dodgy dealers and at the same time maybe save a fortune.
The trick here is to use Government MOT test centres. A knowledgeable chat forum user highlighted the fact that local councils have their own MOT testing stations for council vehicles (i.e. buses and ambulances). Yet by law these test centres must be open to the general public. As they only carry out tests, and not repairs, thereÔš's no incentive to find faults that donÔš't exist.
Many savvy MoneySavers that have used these test centres have reported their cars consistently passing MOTs, having previously failed at other garages. Funny that! Though obviously this is not guaranteed after all MOTs are there for your safety, and you never know if your carÔš's got a problem.
Use the table to find a government-run test centre in your area. If thereÔš's not one listed, try phoning your local county or borough council, or look on their website, which would be yourarea.gov.uk, for example www.dudley.gov.uk. The council should be able to tell you of your nearest one.
You can expect to pay about Ԛ£40-45 for a test at a Government MOT centre. If you find one, why not reply on the chat forum, so other MoneySavers can use it.

Extra Briefing: Retest fees
If your vehicle does fail the test then, once itÔš's been repaired, itÔš'll need to be re-tested.
Generally retest fees are at the discretion of individual test centres. Yet there shouldnÔš't be a fee in any of the following situations:
Ԛ· You leave your car at the garage which did the MOT for repairs.
Ԛ· You bring the car back before the end of the next working day to retest one of the following items: ABS warning, bootlid, brake pedal anti-slip, direction indicators/hazard warning, doors, dropside, exhaust emissions, fuel filler cap, headlamp aim, horn, lamps, loading door, mirrors, rear reflectors, registration plates, seat belts (but not anchorages), seats, sharp edges, projections, steering wheel, tailboard, tailgate, wheels and tyres, and windscreen wipers and washers.
Ԛ· If the vehicle leaves the test premises and returns for a retest on items other than those above a full retest must be done and you may or may not be charged Ԛ—a it depends on the retailer.

Rog...... Welcome back Dude, the place hasn't been the same without you.
We've all missed you and for a while were concerned at your sudden un-announced disappearance.
I had seen this info somewhere before, probably in one of the Sunday supplements. Good on yer for sharing it.
Cheers
Stuart.

But he was always here in his own omnipresant way
Back on topic, I used a place in York which are an MOT shop only, no repair work undertaken at all. They were well strict and even failed me for a magic tree hanging from my rear view mirror - obscuring vision apparently. But at least I know my car was properly checked.
