my sport

hello folks, im off on long term illness just now so minds working overtime.
in early 1998 i bought my d reg 325i sport, a car i had wanted since seeing it nearly new in 1988 when doing my paper round lol. the looks and noise were just fantastic as a 16 year old boy.
right get to the point, its a tech2 from new and yes has sports on the v5, how is there e reg tech 1 sports when mine is a genuine d reg tech 2 which ive known from new ?? thanks in advance.

according to real oem, the mtec 1 body bits were avaliable for cars up until sept 1987, and the tech2 after that.
it's either had a plate swap (maybe a private plate from new) or it was stolen and had an early car's id put on it very early in it's life.
D-reg is Aug 86 to Jul 87, so there shouldnt be any d-reg tech2s as they hadnt started coming off the production line until after the e-plate had been released, unless it was a prerelease press car or something? although tbh i can't remember seeing any e-reg tech2s either

The M technic 2 body kit didn't come out until 1988 but will fit all facelift plastic bumper saloons made after september 1987.
ive only got 2 pictures of it, one in 1998 and one a couple years ago. bit of a pc numpty and trying to set up to put pictures up, unless some one pms me an email address ill send the pics to them to put up phew
the thing is i have known this car from new only thing not original was some one pinched complete rear bumper years ago so put basic one on.

This is a bit of a mystery. I've only ever seen Tech II kits on F plates and newer in the UK. Tedswagon has a 325i with a high comp lump (original) and plastic bumpers and it's an E reg.

I've got a couple of pics and from what I can see, it's got all the Tech II bits on, combine this with the point about this car being known from new and it's a mystery.
I'll post them up later, currently blocked at work.

Well that car in the picture has the later sept '87 onward facelift lower rear wheel arch profile.
To change a pre sept '87 pre facelift car to the later style wheel arch profile would require, new rear quater panels, new rear panel and various other sections that are behind the rear arches.
Other features that mark it out to be a later car are the headights. "Smiley" type elypsoid headlamps were introduced in 1989.
To fit the tech 2 front spoiler and facelift fog lights you need the facelift front metal valence.
Have you got any pics of the rear of the car as in that single pic something about the rear bumper looks odd.
One thing i will say though is if you V5 log book states "date of registration 08/01/1987" and the original reg was D774 FEG and the car is an original facelift shell your car will 99.9% be a ringer which is a tech 2 325i Sport with a tech 1 325i Sport I.D.
If that is the case then i would be looking at the scuttle panel for signs of molestation to this area to change the stamped VIN number.

Very useful analysis BSS and I tend to agree with the points you've raised. However, what's confusing me is the OPs point
"when mine is a genuine d reg tech 2 which ive known from new".
Perhaps the engine number will be enough to solve the mystery of whether it had a change of identity or it was smashed up and got facelift bits stuck on for the repair.
On a more positive note, I'll be selling a Tech II Sport shell in metallic black in the next month....

If the car was in front of me i could tell you in minutes exactly what the coo is.
A pic of the engine bay would reveal allot more as well.

hi sorry damn iphone wouldnt let me reply and my son took laptop away to his grandparents for a week.
right last 5 digits on vin are 58034 if any use, i have known this car from new and yes it had a bump when 2 at the front but from memory was only slight bump, definately not rear quarters and the such.
in regard to rear bumper, years ago, around 2001 i took car to metro centre and the complete rear bumper and apron were pinched so that picture shows standard bumper that i fitted as bmw then wanted around £350/400 for replacement.
ill find v5 and put in engine number if any use ? thanks

Put the last 7 digits of your VIN into this. It'll say what it believes your car to be.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is
