Had an idea for my e30 touring of going down the no visible headlight route of chopping up a few grilles and then setting the headlights back 10mm and having the slats of the grille go all the way across like the old chevy trucks (see pic)

Image

please note : the above pic is just a quick p/chop for an example :P

Has anyone on here done this yet? if so how did you go about doing it? As previously said i was going to go down the route of buying 3 grille sets and chopping them up and then plastic welding them, fillering, priming and painting... Just after tips tbh :)

Cheers

kingcruizer on here has a 2.7supercharged cab with the lights hidden behind the grills, he's got a few photo threads up in the photo section.

Would be even more original if you made pop-up style lights like a late 60's Dodge Charger 8)

^ thanks for adding to the stereotype that all bmw drivers are egotistical pricks with no consideration for others. Maybe you should buy a golf?

Whoa.... handbags away :p... I'm sure the zone was never this highly strung... third thread I've read in the last half hour where things seem to have quickly turned to bickering!

OP - I was looking at doing a similar thing by chopping up a pair of plastic grilles and gluing them together to replace the 'kidney' grille in the middle. I basically gave up because the bits didn't line up partially because of my poor hacksaw cutting, and partly because I don't think the lines are perfectly horizontal. It wouldn't have made a huge difference, but since you're looking at going over the headlights too, I'd say it'd be easier to start from scratch. Perhaps having proper cutting and plastic welding kit will make things easier though!

Yeah, try it and see ,I've never been one for following the crowd in the quest to make your car stand out from the crowd,if you know what I mean.
You should have heard the comments when I used to drive a Beetle with rear window louvre,Kamei front spoiler and slot mags! I did it to p*ss the cal-look brigade off
As for the slats on the grille, starting from scratch with steel would be easier, then spray it black (or chrome it? ) ,a lot easier than farting about with plastic.

The rear's mank, the front doesn't look great imo but i reckon it would look good if they hadn't removed the kidneys.

mine was made out of alloy. just the slats were left polished, the rest was blacked out. i also used a smaller main beam unit.

who made the grille for you chap? Also how much was it? i'd love something like this, just with maybe one or two more slats... i have been working on it the past couple of nights and it is a f**king ballache haha... i will be keeping the kidneys. So far this is my progress and if i carry on i will be chopping up
3 grilles in total.

please note they look real rough atm as literally only pastic welded them together... gotta sand, fine fill, prime and paint still...

I'm trying to get them as solid as possible before using 60 grit paper to feather it down smoother on the plastic weld marks and then fibre glass filler parts to make look neater.

I'm just having a go myself and if i fuck up then fuck it... all three grilles only cost me £30 and i haven't damaged the one on the car so cool beans :D worst comes to worst i will approach a proffessional.

i made the grill myself. all custom and all alloy. cost wise was around £70. about 4-5 hours work and the job was done. you say you would like more slats if you had one??? this crosed my mind when i was making it but if anymore are added it starts to affect the light. mine is m.o.t friendly light wise so i wouldnt recomend anymore.
