Empty bit of road, dial up some revs (4k or even more if ur brave), dump the clutch, burn the rubber.
Then park up and go back to where u launched, two black lines=LSD, e.g the rear wheels have locked together. :D
One black line=open diff, all the powers been spun away :(

Sometimes you can spin both with an open diff.

The jacking both sides up routine is better. If you spin one wheel the other should turn in an opposite direction. (I think??)

Better still, try to do a donut, if you can keep going round and round more than once, you have an LSD. (in the dry!!)

they are on the diff casing, it should say 4.10 on a flat part, if it is an LSD it wil have S in front of it.

He'll have to jack up and peer at the diff which i dont htink he wants to do!
Another way is to ring up BMW UK and ask for a printout of ur cars orginal spec sheet, i dont know exactly how you do this but im sure another zoner will tell you. Which is the only way to find out without jacking the car up or smoking her good :D

if you look underneath the car the diff is in front of the spare wheel well. If you get a wire brush you should see a tag covered in crap on the right hand side of the diff. If it's an LSD the tag should read something like S 4.10. LSD's always have S stamped before the numbers. Alternatively jack the rear end up on the diff, it's fine to do this and spin the wheels. With an LSD both wheels will move in the same direction. An open diff they will spin in oposite directions. LSD's are very rare on 318is.

Karan i had woosungs on my old 318i and they are a shocking tyre! They wore out in about 5000 miles! godd for drifting eh?! winkeye

Whilst it's unlikely to be factory fitted, it's perfectly reasonable to assume that one could have been fitting during the course of it's life...

Don't you have 5 minutes to get the jack out of boot, get only 1 of the rear wheels off the ground, whip the handbrake off and see if you can turn the wheel? If it turns freely it's not LSD.

Do you get one wheel spinning up when you accelerate out of say a t junction in the wet? If so - not an LSD

Thats the simplest way of telling with out abusing or jacking up the car

Should be pretty obvious what the cars doing if you've driven it much
Cheers,
Robin

Maybe youve got decent tyres where as all the others you driven are on remolds?
Seriously good tyres make silly amounts of difference in handling! 8)

Amen!

I'm pretty certain a major factor in me destroying my 325 a year ago was the spare rims I was running with the most shite tyres in the world on - mostly different types budgets/remoulds

Should have left the yoko a032-r on LOL
Cheers,
Robin
