This isnt a stupid question... i shall explain.....
If i could rewind time, i wouldnt have taken on my sport project, id have tidied up the plain old dolphin grey 325 (Known by some as HCH)and stuck with it. stupid boy i am.
My project Sport is my biggest problem at the minute - dead money! i still havnt bonded with it. In fact, id go as far as saying that its pissing me off now.... not good position to be in considering the amount of dosh ive thrown at it! Im beginning to hate my own project car! How messed up is that? If i could get 65% of the money back that ive spent on my sport, id sell it in a heartbeat and buy my old car back.
So my questions are thus...
1) Do you actually like your car?
2) What pisses you off about your car?
3) Would you sell your current car to buy an old car back?

you make a good point
i do love my IS, considering i had a mk2 1.3 carbed golf for a year, but the running costs and constant problems start to annoy me, although i would have no hobby if my car was perfect. i just cant wait til its all done tho so frustrating
as for swapping my car back for my old one? do me a favour, i love my e30 to pieces deep down
id swap for an evo 2 m3 tho

1. I do really like my car, although i want it to be faster but more economical, something that just isnt going to happen!
2. I've put quite alot of money into my car and at 15 years old now, im not gona get any of it back really.
3. If i was to sell my car i'd either get a Civic VTi of some sort, as fast and as economical as i'd want really, or be stupid and buy a 200SX money pit.
Scott, you know what i think you should of done, but we cant turn back the hand of time!

You know what?... I thought about soldiering on with my sport and grafting thru it, but normally when i wash my cars down, i pay every inch so much attention. today, when i washed the grit and dust off it (we have been replacing the garage roof), i just sprayed it, and washed it with normal washing up liquid!

1) No i dont like my car,
2) anyone whose seen it will know why, its got holes in it, its rusty things keep going wrong, it currently has no dash, i havent had a cd player in it for about 5months, but since its my only car its quite hard to do the major things on it, without being without a car, hence ive jst bought a ford sierra for Ԛ£0 so i can turn the e30 back into something nice. probably without a bmw engine
3) as much as it pisses me off i've become attached to it and even though i should just reshell it or buy something else. there is no way i want to sell it. stupid cars with character

Thought all had gone a bit quite on the sport front scott.
I think you main problem with it is that you can't drive it!
I hate my car much of the time, its too pink, going rusty and I have to park it soooo far away. It also cost so much money.
but them much of the time i don't drive my car (living in central london its pretty pointless)
All the other times (when i am driving my car/or even working on it) I enjoy it.
I have had my car for very silly 5 years and have many memories attached to it.
From when i spun it round a roundabout (within 2 miles of buying it) to going "castleing" (visitng as many castles in north wales in an afternoon as possible) and driving from aberystwyth to london and back in a day (did that far to many times...)
From doing silly donuts on the beach (which started the rust problem..) to my girlfriend reversing it into a ditch the first time she drove it (2nd time she had driven a car....) and much
I have done 45 000 miles in my car and i have never commuted to work in it, its purely a play thing.
Memories and being able to get me to Anglesey from london in 3.5 hours is why i love my car.
Its pinkness and its rust and its somewhat lack of power..... are why i hate it!
So Scott, you need to stop being a tart with the sport and just get it road worthy so you can enjoy it, add new bits as and when, but just get it road worthy so you can drive it.

oh its also my only car that i have ever really owned, so i can't really go back to another car! I doubt i'll sell it as it pretty worthless! I'd like to see 200 000 on the clock (its 121 000 now...) then break it and scrap the a shell and buy another!
Scott you cant let it come to this!
You have spent the good part of a year maybe more sorting her out, i know its still a long way off and thats probably whats so daunting!
You cant just not give a shite about it now tho or you'll stand at an even bigger loss.
Percentage wise how far is it really from being done? d
Does it start?
Is the interior all cleaned and in?
Running gear all smooth?
Brakes sorted?
I dont know were abouts you are with it, although i seem to remeber the last pics of it where when i can out the body shop ( I think)

1) Do you actually like your car?
Most of the time... i.e. when its just got some new bits on it, or its just been polished up, or when i see heads turn and watch me when im driving along, or when someone comments on how good it looks. Hate it when i look out and see it dirty, or when i get beaten by a faster (but shit looking) car... or when i find wee bits of rust.
2) What pisses you off about your car?
Its as slow as a month of sundays
Its been to the moon and back
Its still a 16 year old car at the end of the day
3) Would you sell your current car to buy an old car back?
Nah, my old cars have been shite, newer, and tidier than the '30, but still shite.

Nice to see Scott's back with worthwhile threads...
1) Do I like my current car?
A: Yes. But it's not my choice of chariot, more of a matter of taking the best of a bad bunch and going with it. Nothing wrong with it, except it's not an E30. Old skool kool cruiser, yes, but it's no E30. With a few subtle mods it could be made into quite a car, but what's the point in spending money on a Ԛ£235 smoker when you know you;re going to sell it at the first opportunity to get another E30 anyway...
2) What pisses me off about it...?
A: Nothing really. The hub caps (or lack of alloys) irritates me. But nothing pisses me off about it to be honest. It's the best car ANYONE could find for that kind of money. Maybe the colour isn't the best though... Ooooh, I know what pisses me off about it: the bloody electric ariel! It sometimes doesn't go up all the way, and it makes SO much noise when retracting and goes on forever... There! There's something to moan about...
3) Would I sell it to buy an old car back...?
A: Oh yeah, of course I would. Bring back my 320iS... all is forgiven. Now that was a car! Or would I have my original Series 1 Sport back...? Might sell it for my old Audi Coupe 2.6E - what a beast!
So to surmise... my current steed is not the mode of transport I would choose ordinarily, but it's a damn good car for the money. A 2.7 litre automatic cruising machine that returns 45mpg... who could ask for more?
I can sympathise with the Sport project though Scott. If you're not in love with right from the start, there's no hope for it. I've been there with a Mercedes 190, a Golf Mk3 GTi, and a Saab 900.
Hope things get better dude... for both of us.
Giles.

However as i see it you only have a few choices,
1; Sell it as it is you will loose loads, but it would be the end of it (this is probably what a finacial advisor would say....)
2; Leave it and wait until you do have money...how long for? always be hanging over your head etc etc
3; Some how get it road worthy, i'm mean anyway of getting it road worthy getting an engine that works, a crappy interior etc etc surely you could do that for not a lot? Insurance can be paid monthley, or put it on with your parents...
3.1; If you could get it road worthy and give it an MOT it would be far more saleable and you would loose sooo much money.
I'm sure you know all this already anyway and have probably put it through your head a thousand times, but if you can't afford it and its really affecting you life then its best to get ride, it will only pull you further and further down.
but then its up to you, try to fall back in love with it!

tbh Scott i think the main problem is that you took the sport on when maybe you werent in the best finacial situation to do so.. now you look at the money it owes and the fact you have not alot to show for it apart from a red bank account..

Gwyn, glad u see my point.
i cant sell it, coz i'll still be paying for it and i will have absolutely nuffink to show for the 6k i spent on it,
i got to leave it tbh mate, i dont have much choice. i know of a sport for sale for Ԛ£600. i dont know what condition its in, but i know its a BMW and that everything is compatable, so i could, if i wanted, use it as a donor for my project when the mot and tax runs out on this Ԛ£600 one, IF it requires loads of work. However, if the Ԛ£600 one sails the MOT, keep it and life is good. However, a Ԛ£600 sport carries Ԛ£1000 of insurance. not good, but i would have wheels.
i can get a diff for Ԛ£40 i guess, fit that, fit my gearbox, and get a spare engine from somewhere or bodge up mine, but that defeats the whole point of refurbing it, just to bodge it and have to rebuild the engine anyway for another day.
i can get a Ԛ£40 interior but the car still needs to go back to the bodyshop coz im not happy with it.
Jhonno, you are right sir. the sport refurb was started in less than perfect times.

1) Yes ... and no
. Sometimes I like it very much, other times I wish I had something else. If I sold it I would be sad to see it go so I guess the answer is yes.
2) The brake pedal, the gearbox (ratios and gearchange), the lack of straight line performance, the rattles, the engine. Which sounds like most of it but the 1 big thing that I really like is the chassis and handling which makes all the rest bearable sometimes.
3) Maybe. I used to have a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. Actually it was my parents but I was supposed to get it when I got my drivers license except that I didn't want it because at the time I thought it was a bit slow and I couldn't drive very well. Now I really know what slow is with my 323i and the VR-4 was more comfortable, didn't rattle, had a good gearbox, etc.. I don't think it would ever handle quite as well as my E30 though so I'm not completely sure I would want it back, I would probably rather go forward. One car I do want "back" is one that I still own, a '74 Mitsubishi Lancer, that rolled over (NOT while I was driving!). I wish I could drive it again, but I didn't comfortably fit in it for longer journeys so I would still need my E30 as well.

Scottie,
Sounds like you've lost heart with the sport. If money was no option, would you be happy keeping it and finishing it off? If the answer is yes, then sell off your girlfriend (saw her in the other thread, very nice
).
If the answer is no, then i think it's time you sold the sport..... I've been in the same situation (still am..) i bought a '96 E36 M3 EVO a few years back, it needed work to put it back on the road. I was slowly getting through it, when i was rear ended on the way home from work. I physically couldn't work on the car for 9 months, by the time i was well enough i couldn't give a damn about the car, it sat in the garage for another 18 months, then i sold it. Then there is my MGBGT...............
What ever you do, don't destroy the car, scratching the paint work isn't going to help matters, you will regret it more one day.
Hell I'll even send you a tenner towards the resto!
Original Q, i love my car! it might not be much, but it gets me about.
the only thing that annoys me is that it isn't 'tight' as a new car... feels loose up front, could spend a fortune on all new suspension etc, or just leave it, and spend the money on something else....

1) I do like my car. I think it looks cool. I also like the idea of my car running and the fact that the conversion is drawing to an end1) Do you actually like your car?
2) What pisses you off about your car?
3) Would you sell your current car to buy an old car back?
2) The fact that it's not properly rust proofed and it doesn't have an LSD
3) I wouldn't sell Brown, but I would have my 205 back if I was given the chance!
Don't get pissed off with your project, you know it'll be worth it in the end! It's taken me 8 months an countless monies to get this far with mine and the end is in sight so I'm quite enthused about it now
E46 320Ci 6 pot
1) Do you actually like your car? - Yes very much
2) What pisses you off about your car? - Bugger to install audio in properly
3) Would you sell your current car to buy an old car back? - only if I could have it with a straight 6 as it was an E36 Compact
E30 based Marlin Sportster
1) Depend if its going ok or not, mostly yes
2) Its a real pain getting all the parts I need, on time.
3) No way I am so far into this project there is no turning back now! It's turning into a bit of a money no object exercise though!
