I just read a few old posts about estimating transmission losses on a car and oh boy I don't want to open that debate up again.
One question though, does anyone have any data on the relative transmission loss between and auto and a manual e30?
My guess would be 5hp but thats just a guess.

The lock up torque converter kicks in in 4th gear at about 83km/hr. Using my "arse dyno" I'd say there is a slightly noticeable difference in hp when the converter is locked and unlocked.
Any opinions out there on whether the locked up converter gives similar losses to a manual?

need to remember its not so much the loss in power, as a automatic tranny is never 100 percent locked and the engine is basically turning a large oil pump you lose response more than anything else. a auto car never picks up like a manual does when you get youre foot down, thats what i always bear in mind, you wont actually lose that much power but what you do lose is that kick that sticks you to the seat and also part throttle is never as sensitive coming out or round a corner.
