confused,which ecu?
Moderator: martauto
hello zoners, i bought a 325i engine last month , it came with the wiring loom but no ecu. a friend of mine tells me i have a facelift engine (not the best one) appently the engine was removed from a 325i touring. on the head theres a logo stateing 2.5 and underneith that 2.7, i hear that these heads where made in china and are common for head gasket fails or carcking heads, but i was given a reciept that states the mileage and a rebuilt engine, head gasket ect , so really should b a ok i hope
, now i havent got round to fireing her up just yet , but i want a ecu that i can chip and get the most out of this engine, i bought a e34 525i petrol manual ecu today, the guy that sold it to me says this will fit ok as the e34 2.5 was a m20 lump, is this all correct? the part number on the ecu is bosch 0 261 200 178. whould this ecu be ok for this engine?
there's a part number on the plug on the 325 wiring loom , if it's the same as the e34 one then it should be ok??willnz wrote:If the ecu plug on 325 engine matches that on the e34 engine, it will work.
Thatnks for your response , appreciated.
willnz u are the man! I never new that , will give it ago, cheers very muchwillnz wrote:There are 2 types of ECU plug, one has 2 rows of pins, the other has 3 rows. The e34 would be 3 rows, if the 325 is a 3row plug, the e34 ECU will work in it.

According to this list, the 178 ECU is intended for an E32 730i, but fear not, being a later Motronic 1.3 ECU from a six-pot BMW, it will work with your M20B25, provided you change to a suitable EPROM chip

Nice plug Maurice
if your original was a 172 ECU you can chip that to suit too.
