I HAVE AN ALPINA!

I'M SHOUTING AREN'T I?

Finally got it after two week wait. Absolutely top notch, drinks like a thirsty fish. 8O

Apparently it was re-shelled by Autobahn in 1999, explaining the suspiciously unrusty arches.

Pics to follow, I'm now going out to get drunk at a wedding. :P

The height is just due to my driveway I think, though earlier ones were like that.

I paid Ԛ£1895 for it - it's been reshelled six years ago, but it's lost it's original lump. I'm still trying to figure out what's in it now; Probably a 2.3 (could you run anything else on LE Jetronic injection?). Whilst this is a downer, it means I don't have to be too precious about it. It's in daily use, and if it still had an Alpina 2.5 in it and something went wrong...

Also, I could always drop a 2.7 in...

If it's been reshelled but hasn't got the original engine, what exactly has been reshelled? Or am I just being stupid here? :?

Zayyan - fair question. Their is a receipt for Ԛ£4500ish for a rebuild, i.e. various new parts, transfer of parts into new shell, and a respray. No mention is made of the engine, so who knows whether it was still there then...

However, I've just worked out that the numbers at the bottom of the block near the dipstick match the last four numbers of the VIN; although they don't match the actual engine number on the V5. Confused yet?

I've now no idea what to think, so further research is neccesary.

Incidentally, the head is a 731, which means it's a 2.0 or 2.3 head?

Right, I think I've sussed it with some expert help - I now believe it to be the right engine; most of the evidence points to this, the discrepancies may just be the usual inconsistency in Alpina identification.

Anyway, it's got a 84mm block, a 731 head, it's too quick to be a standard 323i motor and it can't be a 325 engine. So unless it's a 2.7 winkeye (unlikely) it must be a C2 2.5.

Further checks to make, but I'm reasonably satisfied.

If its got a 84mm Block then you have the 323i Crank.......proper proper engine which must rev like hell!

Its really a 2.6 litre then. Very good!

Take care of her mate and get some proper suspension in there. Alpina stuff is way too hard for UK roads and its too high aswell.

Yeah, the suspension is good at waking me up in the mornings so far...

It has a receipt with it for a Spax spring kit in the early nineties, so I suppose the original Alpina springs must be long gone anyway.

Suggestions gratefully recieved!

Hap, was thinking Zender too, will have to look closer for any markings.

Alpina springs did have a tendancy to break especially at the front so it wouldnt surprise me if they had been changed.

I took apart the suspension on the C2 and 3 springs were broken.....explains the horrid handling!
