Sounds like they have just tried to lever out the lock barrel.

Is the door damaged around the hole where the barrel fits?

The barrel is held in place by a C shaped thin metal clip that slots in the other side of the door skin. So you'll have to remove the door card to access the inside of the door.

The c clip will probably be sitting at the bottom of the door. You may be lucky and get away with just putting the lock back in place and securing with the c clip.

Can you still put your key in the lock barrel and turn it?

Norwich normally ain't a bad place. Do you live on the Larkman? :P

Maybe it's just the C clip on the back that has come off

Sounds like the 'U' shaped spring clip has broken or dropped off.
You will have to get the door card off anyway, you may just get lucky and find the clip in the door bottom.
Lock needs to be fed in through the door skin and an alloy bracket that supports a micro switch for the dead lock, fiddly to do,but it goes in eventualy with a little patence, then the clip slides on to keep all secure.
There's a chance that the lock barrel could be damaged,it should have an arm on it to operate the locking gear, this can break off...best fix is either a s/h lock set or a 'barrel repair kit' from the stealer at about £20.

This thread is pretty picture-intense, but there's some great photos of the C-clip everyone's talking about.

I used all the advice there to change the locks on my E30, and while it's a pain in the arse (probing through the door skin with two long screwdrivers like chopsticks) it's do-able.

I'm working on a door right now; I'll see if I can get a pic of it in situ from the inside for you. Fingers crossed...

oh yes definetly a riddly job fitting the C-clip. just undo few bolts to get ther window mechanisms loose to get to the lock from inside.

ask the seller of the lock sets on ebay if they are fully working especailly the driver side due to 20 years of wear and tear the arm inside could be broken and will not lock or unlock properly. same situtation i had with my lock set off ebay and it was my 2nd lock set i ordered off ebay as the 1st lock set had a snapped lock arm just like the 2nd lock set so then JB WELD glue came in hand , its 2 glue sticks that you mix together and it sticks like as if youve done a weld job and all i did was just glue the rotary arm together and now its solid as anything otherwise i wouldve been stranded with a 2nd set of locks LOL.

I knew keeping bookmarks was a good idea :)

Once you've got the barrel in your hands, this is how to take it apart and rebuild it.
