what is your reason for not swapping the engine?

if its insurance, by the time you have declared the mods, you may find it was cheaper just to go bigger

Waste of pennies. Really, really, really avoid spending silly money mate.

Daimlerman said straight away in your last thread concentrate on the handling, which isn't as much of a waste.

A lot of engines follow the same principles for tuning. Make air go in easier and exhaust go out better. Force air in (charging). Or changing profiles/ratio's and whatnot of internals to change powerbands and prolong them or whatever.

You could spend thousands on a M40 only to still be slower than a shitter of a 325i.

My advice, if your serious, is to rebuild a 318i cylinder head (not that difficult) which if you find a reasonable one in the first place will not cost too much. Then give your car new filters, oils and a good check over. Then a chip/remap. Finally an induction kit, a manifold and exhaust. Probably looking at somewhat £1000 and 10/15 more bhp.

A camshaft will just raise the powerband or prolong it etc. It wont make your car go faster. Induction kits and manifolds wont really do anything if the engine is stock, and still full of 20 years of wear and tear.

A chip is your best bit to get on its own. £30.

Handling though, every part will improve your car as much as it would to any other E30.

a cam will increase power, thus making it go faster.

could be argued a lumpy enough cam will limit use on a road car, but still, a decent cam will make it faster.

Good service and a cheap chip.

Then make it it handle the best you possibly can.

piper do a cam for it
bigger TB and maybe an exhuast will help a bit

thats it for bolt on/in bits.

you could get 130ish bhp out of it with relative ease, but if you want to be a hero i dont see why 180bhp will not be possible but it will cost a fair bit in terms of head work and ITB's

i think Lester owen has had 2.0 M10's making brutal ammounts of power !!

chu346 had a turboed M40 running on megasquirt that had been dynoed at 190bhp and it was very nippy. He was selling it as a complete conversion before christmas, he may still have it?
