full exterior respray

hi

i have now completed my car with mtec 2 body kit, as it was not standard on IS

iv got a cosmos black body thats been attacked by the previous owner, white side pods and mtec 2 spoiler, grey skirts and a black rear bumper, so a respray is in order i feel

i only want the outside done tho, i know they aint cheap but what sort of price should i be looking at?

i wud be happy at like 800 quid, i dont wont the doors inside resprayed or a snazzy colour or n e of that shi* just wont it resprayed in the same colour as its dier at the moment

id scream for around 600 if u get a painter on a good day, especialy if u do the odd bit of prep yourself

sand primer? of course!!, in fact u should also sand paint ( but i never liked the idea of that

prep i mean hit the whole car with lots of water, 800 / 1000 and plenty of elbow grease

normally, the bit that pisses most painters off ( and the bit that gets the most cut corners) is the prep work, so any help will bring the price down alot

Always worth a little elbow grease to save a few pennies,your saying that you wont do it as well as the pro's,but it will help alot if all they have to do is a final bit of prep before painting mate.

wet and dry paper, form, i dunno? halfords or summin

just wet the whole car, then work an area at a time. the more u work it the smoother uԚ´ll get it..

dont worry about the primer, as the painter will sort that..

i did the prep on mine, stripped it, sanded, and watched as the painter ( my mate ) took his good sweet time to paint it

only stip the car (f/r lights, door handles, locks, rubbers and seals) alot of painters wont like working on cars that thay havent prept them self

I would just take everything off the car, trim, handles etc. TBH, unless youve got a DA sander and some good prep stuff, then your be there for about 10 years trying to wet and dry a whole car to the stage where its paintable. Id ring around mate, say how much would a bare respray cost if you strip down the trim etc, ring around and say "ive been quoted xxx and see what people will do"

if u got no idea on how to prep a car 4 paintin ur waistin yours and the painters time, dont do it if u dont know what ur doin

Yeh 318-is. Well the thing is mate, my dads been in the motor trade since he was my age, and my brother is as well. And as an example my brother (rare) got some paint done on his lach silver 2.7sport a few weeks back and paid 300quid, for what would normally be a 500+job as its metallic.


So if you dont know anyone then it might be a little harder getting good quotes.But just shop around and say your motors in good nick, no body work needed, just a quick blow over in the existing colour, and the car will come all ready to be preped.


If people say "a grands the best we can do" dont take the piss but just try and knock them down, "Oh right, i was quoted 800 by so and so"....youll either get a "hmm...Ok then" or "Fcuk off". Worth a try geez!


Like daddy says, unless you sorta know what your doing dont bother.Dont mean to sound patronising mate, but ive got some small bodywork experience and i know how long it takes to prep a gpood car.

If you do it by hand and miss bits etc, not only will the finish suck but it cant be blaimed on the painter.And as said, a lot of people take pride in their work so they wont want a car thats been bodged lol.

how long do you think the prepping will take with an electric sander? thing is iv only just got the car on the road but it does need a respray rather badly

i take it a bare respray jsut means a blowing over in the same colour? 800 quid is acceptable i guess i mite do some ringing around tomorrow.

what sort of things would i need to remove? light clusters front lights? grill?? i take it they would mask everything like the windows for me ?

and how long do resprays take?

sorry for the questions but im not to full of knowledge about resprays!

Best things to remove would be handles, radio arial, rear lights (although you gota take it there so might as well leave them), badges, front grills, just to save hassel, not really a lot to take off an E30 tbh, a lot of things can be masked up if done well.


And if you wanted to sand it mate youd really have to get a propper DA sander, im sure you can get them electrical rather than air like used in garages. But you couldnt really use an orbital sander or a DIY type thing. And you for a respray like you want, you dont need to take the whole lot of paint off, basically just give a good going over with somthing like 120 discs, blending in all the paint and primer and making sure its all smooth. Bit more to it than that tho.

The prices people have said should really include the prep. A grand is a good estimate, bare in mind it would take a day to prep it all up propperly, then another for painting or two. Painters like the charge their money lol

if you're hard working, why dont u stomp through all the pages of the forum, and read the question ur about to ask (as its already been asked several times) and save yourself the bother.

It also helps to read and then try to understand what people are saying before asking the next question.

Ԛ£800 won't buy you a good respray or even a flash over of the car. Even if you got it done and it looked okay, you'd find paint flaking off after a year or two.

If you don't know anything about prepping a car, then DO NOT attempt it. Expecially with an electric sander, christ, you'd make a right mess of it. It's a very difficult trade to learn, prepping a car for spraying.

Do the decent thing and save up a few more quid and get a proper job done. You'll only regret it when you realise what a bodge has been made of it.
