Because the M20 engine sound and drove completely different than anything I'd driven before - and is still better than lots of stuff I've driven since 8)

and it puts the power to the right wheels

and they just look right.

Saw one in a film early 80s pretty in pink. Fell in love with the shape. Bought one a few years old early 90s. Sold it to get married. Bought another one as soon as kids were born - won't be selling this one - just realised 25 year love affair.

I first got into them because I loved the sound they made and I was driving Rover V8s at the time. My first was a 320i and it was the worst car I've ever owned but I could see the appeal of a compact well-screwed together car with a smooth straight six and am now on my 6th E30. Other BMWs and other cars old and new have come and gone but its the E30 that I keep coming back to.

I love the dash of the E30 particularly the bit where it sweeps over the instruments and still looked fairly modern in the late eighties.

Same here. :D And since then I've not owned a FWD car again. In fact I've only had BMWs.

Firstly loved the tourers but convinced myself I didn't need one.

Have been into my Clios and I will always love the French FWD monsters! (Citroens and Peugeots excluded).

Just needed something less costly, still quite fast and with a bit of boot space!

I grew up when they were new, I used to save up my paper round money & buy the latest What Car & Autocar to read the latest road test on them. I loved the shape of the '80s cars, E24,E28,E21,E34 I used to dream about owning one day, I've been really lucky I've owned an E21 & 4 E30s. They've got better with age IMO.

Wife went off to teach her yoga lesson and I spent the whole evening watching E30 M3 videos on Youtube (sad I know). Moreover, I have watched them dozens of times. I just think they are awesome cars.

I still have to pinch myself sometimes when I realise I actually own an E30 M3. I will never sell it, except if I ever come to afford an Evo II of course.

I know I know. The 172 is a great car though, despite anybody's opinions. Even my own.

Ok to drive for a FWD but everything else about it sucks!

'Smokin' Joe Winklehock and Steve Soper nailing the BTCC cars around did it for me. Someone close by had a 325 Tech II and a Lotus Carlton - fell in love with the E30 then... :D

Two reasons:

1. Front end, very aggressive looking
2. Road presence, you get a lot of "respect" in an E30 (or should I say these days you get respect)

Those are my main reasons but now having owned it, I love the fact that it is a well made car

I had a 197 - mental! Talk about having to rinse every rev out of it. A good laugh but frightfully cheap build quality...

Yeah it's the 5k kick in them!!

Build quality is quite dire and depreciation is terrible.

As a driver's car it's up there with the best.

Looks are a personal preference.

two reasons, firstly it was the best load lugger under 1k at the time, no other hatchback or estate comes close.
secondly was rebuilding a 635csi alpina at the time so that probably swayed my hand.

Love the 'Stuttgart' curve, the quarter-light shape that continues through the design ethos today and the line which runs from the tip to the tail.

Still something about them twin headlamps that cause a 'please move' instinctive reaction in humans that was instilled in the 80's...

Sorry! I meant they looked good, with the wipers too. Just little touches like that make me love the car even more.

Even delving into the sliders on the heater controls and seeing that BMW were employing fiber-optics to get the orange glow to the actual sliders - in the 80's!!

So did my Rover SD1 though but the very fact that your average BMW of that era is still leagues ahead of what Rover were able to muster is what made me switch to BMWs.

That distinctive rear window design trait that every BMW shares is called the Hofmeister kink after the man who penned it.

The SD1 was a weapon though! I always preferred it to the Sierra and I loved my Uncles 3500 VP (is that right?). Whatever it was it was cool!

I learnt to drive in my dads chrome 320 - it was the coolest thing on the planet back in 1988

6 years ago, my gf had a lancer evo & her friends' 325 chromie would remain glued to its bumper everywhere but long straights so I had a think.........

I immediately bought a 325 to replace the 306dt to get me to work and back & I just drove the thing as hard as it would go 8) 8O 8) the rest is history
