Hey peps, the strangest thing happened in my engine last nite. I live in Hitchin and i drove to work in cambs, car was fine, then when i was about to drive home, i started my car and it made this wierd noise like a tapping noise. I thought that it was cold and that the noise would go away after a while so i drove down the road. Then all of a sudden bang a loud noise then my engine sounded fcuked :x , so i pull over and pop the bonnet to inspect what had just happened, i pull out my new glovebox torch and look around the engine. To my disgust i noticed that one of my sparkplugs had poped out :? . It wasnt damaged just hanging on the lead, so i got that spark plug tool out of the boot bolted it back in to the engine and then started the engine, no problems drove home fine. This has never happened to me in my 8 yrs driving career or to the others cars i have had. Very Strange.

On eof my brothers friends had this happen on his 320 tourer - I recon it was cos he serviced it himself, it was the one closest to the bulkhead and he hadn't got it in properly. If plugs are loose they do rattle free and will tend to hit the underside of the bonnet when they are finally blown off. Just check the threads in the head are ok

Thats happened twice to me now, sort of..
Last year was driving along quite happily with the g/f when I got a loud tapping noise, pulled over quite worried to find no1 sparkplug had fell out and was arcing against the engine block.
Had a quick check of the engine last w/e and nos 3 and 5 were very loose.
Everytime I've changed the plugs not one was easy to undo to start with so it's a bit weird really.

Aluminium (the head) expands at a greater rate than steel (plug) could that be the answer, compounding the problem of incorrectly torqued plugs?

My mate just had this happen on his Audi, turned out the spark plug hole was threadeddue to some muppet that owned it previously.

This happened to me a loooonnnng time ago on the fifth cylinder that turned out to be leaking oil around the spark plug due to a cracked head
