M3 shell value
Moderator: martauto
Went to my mates garage today and was talking about building something with the s54 engine he has kicking about.
He took me into the back of the garage where he had hanging upside down was a brand new e30 M3 shell with nothing on it apart from 5k worth of roll cage.....roof is missing due to cage being fitted.
Whats it worth??

I know they would be a fortune to buy but Im trying to convince him to sell it to me so want to go to him with a reasonable value to get it off his hands. I know the roll cage cost a fortune its not gonna be worth anything like its original cost.
Is it 100% brand new?? I thought they had been NLA for a long time.
Also, 5k of cage, must include fitting cost?, for 5k you could fill every square inch of car in roll cage spec metal!*
*well perhaps not quite, but you get the jist. Unless you have a complete donor car and a lot of patience, it seems a pointless purchase to me...

It is 100% brand new but has been painted in red oxide to stop any rot. It has been sat in this warehouse for 4 years cos they built a super touring car from a compact instead of the E30. Yeah 5k sounds expensive but its not your normal shell....it would have had to comply with the strict racing shell rules.
I know what you're saying about the time and cost.

If I had the donor car, I would offer £2500-3500 I think dependant on how much I liked the guy.
Possibly the only 'brand new' shell around might make it worth more to certain people, especially rally lads, but then they don't know where this garage is...

fairly, how shall we put it, 'well used' standard shells seem to make a couple of grand plus. for something properly as new, with an extensive roll cage built to a good spec, i.e dtm or supertourer standards has to be worth a good 5k plus
cheers,

i say you be looking at 5 to 6 k if it new witha race spec cage. you could buy a rotten one strip and sell the bits but then have the cage. it hard to tell really. has he a figure. if he into racing then he knows the true value and potential and of course the rearity of a good shell
"New" shells acording to some threads on s14.net are worth about 10k, this is worth less due to the cage as most people want a new shell for a concours rebuild.
5k cage is about right for stop spec item, also the shell may have been modifed with rasied turrets/wheel wells and diff mount like the later DTM cars which all costs loads of money.
Got to be worth 3-4k as a used m3 shell is about 2-3 plus even to supply and fit a cutom cages cage is about 2k, plus the rust repairs and shot blasting the shell would easly get to 5k

It wasn't something I asked him.armanib wrote:Can i just ask where did he get it from?
He used to build and race cars for his own drivers but also built cars for others......reason why he didnt use it was that he found the e36 compact with s54 was more competitive.
He will have one of those for sale soon as well.
He gave up the racing as it was seen as a very expensive hobby.
I didnt remember all the details that he told me but the diff mount and raised turrets is bang on plus its got holes for the air jacks.e21Jason wrote:"New" shells acording to some threads on s14.net are worth about 10k, this is worth less due to the cage as most people want a new shell for a concours rebuild.

I WANT....

Chris
sounds like an expensive project. My M3 is caged and awaiting shot blasting to get all the underseal off underneath.

The only problem with a bare shell from your point of view is it will cost you a fortune to buy all the bits that are missing from it. From someone else's point of view who is looking to reshell their existing M3 then it is extremely desireable......
Alright Toby, Ive been adding up(ish) how much it could be and stopped at a kings ransom.215m3 wrote:Chris

This has had all the underseal removed as well.
Think I might just see if I can sell it for him then he might give me a smaller bill when he has finished my M3.
Remember seeing a DTM spec'd cage on one of the sites like S14.net or DTMpower...
Had the full DTM cage and rasied turrets etc, can't remember what the price was though...
Would love to have a new one built to such a high standard... pitty I have no money to spend on these kinda things

M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
Does it have an identitiy? or was it purely for racing? Bare shell as in no wings? how extensive is the cage? and what do you want to do with the finished car? Many questions! Sounds like a find though.
and the rest......................paddyvw wrote:sounds like it would be a expensive project. the engine would cost 3k not to mind the gear box and all the little bits
If you want a DTM engine, budget £5-8K depending on what level of internals.
