so say i was to fit a M20B25 in my 316, how would go about registering it on the log book as a 2.5 and keep it insure as its my daily car whilst staying legal?
also once ive changed the log book to a 2.5 can i then just get insurance quotes on a 325i?

fill in the new engine capacity on your logbook and post it off, it'll come back to you within a week usually. the model will still be a 316 though, just with a larger capacity.
you will have to tell your insurance company that you have changed the engine as it'll still show up on their system as a 316, originally with a 1600cc engine. if you have changed that, you have to tell them. make sure you do this before driving it as otherwise you could be left uuninsured in the event of an accident
a lot of insurance companies will try to fleece you, others will just treat it as a 325i for insurance purposes. shopping around will be a necesity
give adrian flux, hic and the other usual candiates a call before you do the swap, it depending on your age etc etc etc the insurance cost may be prohibitive

only takes 5 mins and the price of a stamp, technically you are obliged to do it. that said, i can't imagine anyone will get into trouble for it. it's not like you're keeping under a cc limit for tax reasons is it?
mine is registered as a 3430cc petrol/gas dual fuel 325i

i went the other way, from a manly 2.5 to a piddly little 2.0.
i dont think it effdects the tax until you go below 1.4? its something that should be done but its not as important as telling the insurer.
Do not be tempted to insure it as a 325i - insurance companies are not in the business of doing you a favour, and for insurance purposes, the car is and always will be a 316i. They will happily sell you a worthless insurance policy, it's free money to them. You buy insurance for a reason, not just for a piece of paper to wave at policemen.yeah_mick wrote:i called flux yesterday and they would only give me fully comp at over £700.
im 23 with 4 years no claims.
directline on a 325i wanted 450 fully comp.
looks like ill give them a call.

Exactly. There won't be anywhere to hide - don't tempt fate!fuzzy wrote:the insurance company database will show up the reg as a 316 anyway so they will know.
