i want to drive it back but dont want to get insured for the year or 6months cause im gonna be doing work to it for about a month or 2.

Have you tried your present insurer? They will often add a vehicle to your present policy on a temporary basis.

You generally have to be 21 for specific day insurance...

If you put short term car insurance in on Google it'll bring up A few companies straight away including one that advertises on tv-are these the ones that you tried that aren't any good for you?

Otherwise just add it to your current policy-I've done it a few times.

Have you actually enquired with your existing insurer about the cost of temporarilty adding this vehicle for a day or week? Or are you assuming they will have your eyes out?

I don't think the usual day insurance brigade will touch you at 17 though, if not can't you get a parent to add it to their policy as a temp vehicle to drive it back for you?

I tried insuring my cab to get it home from the dealers when I bought it. Im 21 and it was quite difficult to find day insurance, and when I did it was stupidly priced.

As Jhonno said, the best thing to do is to insure it and cancel it during the 12 day period if your insurance provides that service of course

....or consider the date that is put on the V5 for change of ownership and drive it 3rd party on your current policy whilst it is not owned by you. Needs an understanding seller to work - no harm in asking.

This is also no good for a driver under 25.

For DayInsure you will need to be over 23, or over 21 if the car is lower than insurance grp15. The rules all changed in December 2008.

I'm 21 and previous to that I would frequently drive my bosses 58' Honda Civic Type R, or my Dads 05' Mondeo ST220 V6.. when I tried to insure the Mondeo in February I was shocked to find the rules had changed and I was stuck completely unable to insure the car for the 3 days I needed..

You could fully insure the car, and use the 14 days cooling off period to cancel the insurance once you got it home!

With many products and services bought over the phone/internet, the supplier has to offer a 'cooling off period' in which you can cancel your order with no penalty. I'm not certain if this is the case with insurance, but it sounds reasonable.

You can insure the car, and with most credit agreements you get a 'cooling off' period of 7-14 days.. whereby you can cancel the policy before the 14 days are up and not be liable for the entire insurance payment or fee's etc..

Not sure where you stand if you pay a large deposit, but like with most car insurance brokers if you try and cancel mid policy you are usually liable for a huge fee.. this is waived if you cancel within the cooling off period.

Something like this will be written by the insurers...

"When you purchase an insurance policy from us, you have a fourteen-day period during which you can change your mind and withdraw from the contract. This fourteen-day period starts from the date on which your policy commences or the date on which you receive your policy documents, whichever is later. If you decide to cancel your policy during this period, your insurer may make a proportionate charge for the time your insurance has been in force, and a proportionate charge may also be made for any add-on policies you may have taken. In addition, we will retain a charge up to £15 for the set up of the policy. As long as you have not made any claims, any other money you may have paid us will then be refunded. If you wish to exercise your right to withdraw from your insurance policy you should advise us of this by calling us on 0845 217 6470 or by writing to us at:

UIA (Insurance) Ltd
Prospect House
Gordon Banks Drive
Trentham Lakes North
Stoke-on-Trent
ST4 4TW

You must return with this letter any Cover Note or Certificate of Insurance we have sent to you."

the cooling off period is part of the consumer credit act and afaik stands for all credit contracts. you'll have to pay in installments to be elligible though.

i have done this once and cancelled with no charges after reading the ridiculous terms in the policy when it arrived in the post and thinking, no thanks.

worth a go but could turn into an argument
