as if my e30 didnt have enough problems
was out driving, going to pick up some friends, when suddenly, BANG, followed by a really loud exhaust tone, thought it could be only one thing, carried on driving till i got to where i was going, had a look, and the exhuast had fallen off, had a look underneath, the whole system was coverd in rust and broke at the rear box join, thought nothing of it, car then filled up with people and was rather low, too fast over a speed hump and crunch, the whole system fell off!
had to stop to pick up the pieces, eventually got home where it will be for a while, as i cant afford to fix the thing,
now im back in the crappy peugeot again, great fun!
not another problem..

God you prople don't even know you're alive!! I'll give you unlucky (and just a bit stupid):
Car needs a new cam. off comes the head, stripped, rebuilt, put back togehther. (Ԛ£300)
1000miles......
Car drinking coolant, making lots of mayo.
Head off again, stripped, tested, cracked. Brand new bare head, built up, put back on. (Ԛ£450)
80 miles (yes, just 80 miles).........
Gearbox cooks it's fluid and refuses to move the car.
It's currently in the workshop (somewhere between Ԛ£600 - Ԛ£800)
this is my second E30. In the 4 years I had my first 318iS it had:
Diff, head gasket, thermostat, AFM, fuel pump. All done by BMW (I didn't know what I was doing then) the bills ran into telephone numbers, and the car broke down spectacularly each time.
My cheap petrol Xantia on the other hand has been a paragon of reliability. I sometimes don't believe I'm about to sell it and keep the BMW?

Thats a stupid price! even recon gearbox's cost Ԛ£200 and it should only really be Ԛ£150 labour.Gearbox cooks it's fluid and refuses to move the car.

Can you give me the number of someone who can supply me with a fully reconditioned ZF 4HP22-EH for Ԛ£200??
I'm only paying Ԛ£495 for the box, and not having the expertise to recondition an electro-hydraulic automatic (and I'm no goon with a handful of spanners) I've left it to the professionals.
Without the space or patience left to remove the box, get it to the reconners then come home with it and put it all back in I think Ԛ£150 to do the job is pretty reasonable.
The difference between the Ԛ£650 and Ԛ£800 is Ԛ£150 for a torque converter incase the old one doesn't flush out.
I think the skills (and tools required) to rebuild one of these boxes would require a bit more than the learning of some DIY. Mate
