LOL
"its three-box shape and dark, drab and rather cramped interior was looking very dated. In perhaps an ultimate indignity, Car magazine (March 1990) tested a 316i against a Rover 216 GSi (just Ԛ£165 less expensive, at Ԛ£11,820) and judged the then-new, Honda-engineered Rover the better car for the money: the BMW was "simply out-performed - and out-handled, too - by the faster, sharper, smarter Rover"; "technically and aesthetically, the BMW is as old-fashioned as the 216 is modern."
I remember the zone discussing that review before too, any Rover 216 owners clubs around nowerdays then boys?

That review was a little dissappointing! Thought they would have had more praise for it than that.

Shame they didn't do the 318iS against the 216/218 gsi
Things might've been slightly different
