FWD & barely any more power than a 325, despite being a more modern 2.8. And they're uuuugly. How tempting.

There are people around who love the vr6 and I think for a 2.8 or 2.9 they are shit. sound good but sound does not get you good times. What do you want in a car?

The R32 suffers from chronic understeer and it's a fking heavy lump at the front. I hear you can tune the nutts off the 2lt GTi's to a much better power than the R32.

TBH I don't see the issue in buying one , they are one of the better built cars of today and lets face it pratical.

The R32 is very tame. Not boring, but not exciting either. It's fast, but doesn't feel it. I think that's the thing Zizzle wants. If he was after something fun, he'd look past front wheel drive wrongness and stick with a BMW. The VR6 is a half measure in either direction.

I take it you are considering a Mk3 Golf VR6. In which case in addition to the comment above:

"FWD & barely any more power than a 325, despite being a more modern 2.8. And they're uuuugly. How tempting."

they rot like f*ck. Honestly, The Mk3 golf has to be to poorest car VW produced. Interior trim gets tatty quicker than any other car I've known, The rear arches were already rotting away before the end of the 6 year corrosion warranty period and even the VR6 wasn't even quick. The 8v 2.0 GTI was a joke.

How can I comment? I bought a 95 GTI for the wife when it was 4 years old. I looked at 3 VR6's at the same time and just bought the cleanest Mk3 I could find at that time. Barely 50k on the clock within 6 months it was in VW's having the bottoms of the doors sorted for rust.

May as well get a Mk 4 1.8T - £300 on a remap at Jabbasport and thats 200 BHP - good motors. Wouldn't bother with the vr6 too heavy. Shite chassis. Had both.

Agreed, even the standard 1.8T mk4 we had to replace the crap Mk3 was streets ahead. Superb car, probably one of the best cars I've had in nearly 30 years of driving. Could do with some suspension work though to make a "true" GTI but the engine? F*ckin' tops!

My brother owns a MK3 Golf and to be honest there isn't a panel which isn't clear of rust. The interior is very poor with constant annoying rattles etc.

I've always liked the VR6's grunt but again it's all about the build quality for me and not speed.

One of my mates had a mint vr6 which i considered when i found out he was selling it, but after driving it i was like :?

Seems fast on the straight but thats about it, unless its rwd its not a proper car. That engine was designed to be run in rwd format, i do not why they decided to slam that into a mk3.

I agree with above the 1.8 20VT now thats an engine!!

sleepless nights in '' vdub '' forums...... please.
i am the original hater of vw's( saying that lees chariot was rather smart when i see it in the flesh... the mk2 gti ) but that car aside my advise is..
get the cab sorted!!
just thought i would add... the vr6 is on the top of my list to be destroyed in the traffic light gp.... when the head's on......... im gonna laugh my ass off... i can imagine him sitting there on the burger kings and tinted windows thinking hes all that..... then the silver bullet(the torque miser) rolls up.... you see what he dosent know is... i have allot longer legs than he does...
im gonna roll up playing Nas featuring puff daddy... hate me now(lmao! my stereo has given up the ghost... im just trying to create a scenario!)
sorry im running on.....

If you like understeer, rust, a cramped engine bay and an engine that was a poor design on paper. . . let alone after 15 years of uneven bore / piston wear and brittle plastic cam chain guides that are so fun to replace. Oh and don't forget the early engines' chain is at the gearbox end
