In the dark, when there's plenty of other traffic around.
Proper answer, drive at about 7 in the evening, still traffic but it will be dark as the clocks are going back. Get someone to sit behind you covering the plate from ANPR traffic units and just cruise back. Do not speed, do not wear a crash helmet or paper bag. Do not squish anyone.

Also avoid any Fixed ANPR camera's normaly located at major road/motorway junctions.

Trade-plates? Only if you're in the business (car business, not the 'driving cars without tax' business!)
Basically, as you know, you damned well shouldn't. But you'll get away with it if you're careful and no pc plod happens to be checking this thread.

no tax isnt a endorsable offence.dont worry about it. just drive as normal. if its still in the previous owners name any anpr fine wont come to you anyway. its insured , thats the main one, even no mot is only a fixed penaly with no points.
Fuzzy people like you are why I write a receipt out for the new owner and myself which is TIME and DATED. I don't want your speeding tickets thanks.fuzzy wrote: if its still in the previous owners name any anpr fine wont come to you anyway.

i do that tooTIME and DATED.
Timed and dated is the only way.
I once sold a Nova, and got 9 speeding tickets for it in the space of 8 days... All of them for cameras on the same bit of dual carriageway.

first book an mot at your local garage with the reg .
then put the valid mot under the seat .
drive the car home and if you get pulled you say your on your way to an mot as you cant bye tax with no mot and they can ring your mot station and your in the clear.
if they say its got mot then you can say ill go get it and pay the full month
or just dont stop for them because you only get caught if they catch you

You need one in front aswell,I got pulled by a Traffic car that was coming towards me.y8sey wrote:with a mate behind you so they cant sneak up on you,if they do he waits till there is a lot of traffic coming towards you then he indicates to turn right.Plod is held up you are on your toes.
His ANPR read my plate as we passed each other,he turned around and pulled me over,I pointed to the VALID tax disc in my windscreen and also pointed out the computer data base being slow to update!
Best advice to drive a car with no tax..............get someone else to do it for you

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
if its a legit buy and you get a reciept with the time and date and as long as the car is insured and mot'd, you should be ok for the drive home mate! make sure you have all the docs with you and if you get pulled over, you say you have just bought the car and on your way with all your docs to the post office to buy your tax !!

dont do it, i drove past a copper at 12 at night without an MOT and got bounced for that, the computers theyve got nowadays is crazy. i got caught speeding once and the copper was about a mile and half away round a slight bend, he showed me the video and all you could see was the glistening of my headlights. i couldnt believe it!

I drove my car back without tax....not a massive problem..... did a pretty long drive with no tax too just now.....I guess I've been really lucky, but I don't think it'll go badly if you just take it steady and don't drive like a fool :p

Be careful as the ANPR on the rozzers cars will pick you up, then car goes bye bye to the pound mate, not worth it imo, as the fine will be more than the cost of buying 6 mths tax.

If you Got "Haters",Then your doing something Right!

You guys are all missing the main point - driving without tax for a short period is per se not such a big deal.
Main prob is that if you are in an accident whatever insurance you have / heve arranged wont pay out

People saying " insurance is the main thing" are talking utter bollox. You think your insurance company is going to pay out if you have an accident and they find out you didn't have tax or an MOT you'rre sadly mistaken.
If you do get caught or have an accident prepare to be dry bummed

I just taxed my wife's car after a massive pain in the ass mot. Only to realise that the tax had expired a month earlier than she thought. She drives every day from Oxford to Leamington Spa on the motorway. Car was MOT'd and insured but expired tax, never got stopped or anything in the post. I suppose it depends on the Plod in question and if he got laid the night before, though I don't know how fixed ANPR cameras get their rocks off.

I'm useless for taxing and MOTing cars I always leave it too late or cant make the PO or do it on the 1st or 2nd online so have to wait for the disc to come through, I remember going upto scotland in my 316 years ago, grabbed my docs on the thurs and discovered it needed mot, only 3 weeks out of date and had been driving about daily, just luck of the draw i guess
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!
Book an MOT somewhere near you destination and you are then covered by that.
As for insurance there are a number of companies that specialise on the web with day insurance.
I bought some earlier in the year for one day. It cost me £12. Far cheaper than a fine and points.
Here is the one I used...
