rights so i was thinking about swapping the old M40 engine in my 318i touring for an M42, and i was wondering if you guys could help me out by telling me all the pros and cons and if i make this swap would my touring then be considered a 318is touring :winkeye: i know all you six potters will be thinking whats the point why not wack in an m20 and have done with it well at the moment im 19 with a provisonal licence so the insurance rapists wont let me have a big car :cry: :cry:

A 318i touring will always be a 318i touring, even if you fit a 5 litre V8 into it, and give it saloon rear bodywork.
The '318i touring' bit is just a model designation, like Escort or Nova or whatever, when applied to lesser makes.
It will just be a modified 318i touring.
Excellent conversion idea, BTW. Better economy and performance.

thought someone might say that your right naturally but just tought id ask the question lol :D

i was gonna do this in my 318i 2dr m40,the car i went to see was better than what i have so i mot'd it today 12 mth
after fitting some plastic h/light adjusters 8) only cost me £17.36 to swap over insurance.

Do it, best thing I ever did to my car 8) Easy as pie too! I hadn't really done anything mechanical with cars before, and I managed it in a few days.
Not in E30s any more :(

Good idea. I also want to do this but the IS engines always seem to overprice3d. There was a bargain full IS conversion on here a couple of months ago but i didnt have thge moolah then. I really want to get it sorted out for my other halfs mums wedding, she wants me to use mine for her wedding car :mad:

IS mills are a good engine.. but whoever said 4 pots dont understeer is lying! went out for a spin in my recently aquired breaker, yeah it goes well but jesus I prefer a 6 pot over them front wheels!
