I'm 20, on a first year apprentice wage and I can afford to run my E30, which is more expensive to insure than a normal 318iS as it's classed as modified. My car is a bit of a shed though, but it's straight, and (touch wood) reliable. A work in progress project that I'm forever changing my mind about.
Not in E30s any more :(

The petrol and insurance are ludicrous.

That's for a supercharged 2.8, 0 no claims bonus, 1 claim in the last 18 months (accident not my fault, but still counts as a claim) with Tesco.

To be honest, and to probably make a very unpopular point, I like that cars are expensive. A few weeks ago, I was against the Conservative Party's plans to make us all greener and take us back to the dark ages with private transport. But now I think of it differently. Oil is running out. If we continue to consume it at the rate we're going, we might have anything between 10 and 40 years left. So I don't want the oil used up in plastic packaging (which gets thrown away after a few moments) when we could use recycled card instead. I don't want the oil used by power stations (who chug millions of gallons) when we could be using nuclear. I don't even want it to go to those that have Mercedes Benz G-wagen (mostly in towns where the journeys are unecessary) and couldn't care less about the thrill of driving. I want it in my tank, where it will be used twice at the same time. To make important journeys, and to be very much enjoyed while it does so.
I'd rather pay more for the fuel, and have it, than have it cost less and everyone else use it up.

I had a 318is when i was 19 for a year, was a great car and i loved it. I had to get rid of it because it always needed something doing to it and was just too unreliable. My advise is definatly get one! My insurance was £63 a month with tesco.

While it was up and running, it was doing an average of 8mpg. So I disagree.

e30'S ARE CHEAP!

Go buy a 1997 2.0 for mondeo - that will be expensive.

Tax for e30's will never at ridiculous as the mondeo

an e30 if kept in reasonable condition will always be worth £500 - the mondeo will be worth £25 at some point.

E30's have lost most of their value now, and values for good condition ones can only go up. (Unless fools vote in Cameron who is likely to put tax up for older cars)

Parts are cheap, you don't have to pay a dealer £35 an hour to reset your service lights.

and you can drive an 318is so it is very cheap on fuel.

I agree with cloud, I would rather pay a bit more for fuel if it means people who don't really need to be on the road arn't. In my world if you want to go from A-B you go via public transport. but if you want to go from A-B via C and possibly D you can have some fun driving!

You can tell I don't commute to work by car can't you!?

These figures look a bit ludicrous to me. Im pottering around in a 1990 316i which i paid £400 for back in october 2005. My insurance for it this year was £160 with £60 cashback from the post office. So call it £100, that 3rd party F & T. I am nearly 29 and have 10 years no claims. The Cars probably cost me in the region of £400 in parts and maintenance since i bought it 3 years ago.

A e30 has alot of admiration , I took my Alpina to quick fit for a wheel balance . the 2 young Aprentices started just asking me about the car and they thought the E30 is the nutts. the best bit was they said some other guy owned a really awsome white E30 convertable, the satisfaction of telling them I owned it too was just priceless.

At the end of the day no matter the cost of a e30 it will always be an BMW. Learn to work on them and you will fall under there spell. I never known anyone that has owned a E30 and regretted it.

On the plus side once you get over 21 Classic car insurance time.

I am 28 and I have my 325i cab with all mods declared for £260 a year full comp £100 excess

My Alpina C2 2.5 costs me .............................

£139 full comp a year with £100 excess.

Lancaster Insurance + BMWCC membership makes amazingly low premiums.

PS. no No Claims either!

I'll have a shop around once I need it. I didn't know insurance could be that cheap for someone like me. That's why it doesn't faze me to spend twenty grand on the car, it's not much when I'm shelling out four grand just for one year's insurance. I think the recent claim shoves it up a bit, but from what you say, I'm still being over-quoted.
Thanks.

Lancaster insurance give heavy discounts for E30's and members of te BMWCC GB. Was shocked when I got qouted less for the Alpina, but it's because it classed as a 323 still :P

No car is ever going to be mega cheap. Im named driver on a 1989 318i, 21 years old no NCB, no claims costs £642. Can be expensive to run but eassily enough to service yourself and an E30 is still an admirable car that gets looks and positive comments all the time. Gor for it!
