In Australia, all states have different formats for plates. In Tasmania, where I live, the standard format is 2 letters followed by 4 numbers. However, custom plates are available, unp to 6 characters. The other option is 'selected' plates, these can be either 2 letters/4 numbers, or 3 letters/3 numbers. I did a quick online check at the Transport Dept website, and BMW325 is available....
I've never really been into personalised plates.. but it is tempting. As with all things, it's just a matter of money.

I've got SBZ1312. Before it was on the Touring, I also had it on my RS.
I'm a 'plate snob. I hate having a plate that puts an age to the car it's attached to. Even if I ever had a brand new car,I'd put a "private plate" on it.
I used to have HSB164. I had it on my Cortina (this was the '80's!) and then on a Belmont SRi. When the car got stolen and written-off, I got stiffed by the insurance company and lost the plate. It had been valued at over Ԛ£1000 in '88, but all I paid for it was the transfer fee.
I wouldn't pay mega-money for a plate though and it would have to have my initials in.
Stuart.

I used to have VJI 8076 on my iS. Personaly, i think its aload of bollocks, but it was on it when i bought it and i couldnt be arsed to pay Ԛ£80 to swap it for a normal one.
I'd much rather have a normal reg plate, or maybe a decent personalised one, but the cheapo irish plates (like mine) look cack.
They don't jide the age of the car at all, cause anyone with half a brain knows that the e30 looks like an old design!

318iS became MR2 Turbo became FTO GPX Mivec became Impreza became Rover 620Ti became Honda S2000 (current) became Fiesta 1.25 and 200SX Drift Slag (when the Honda has gone)

I don't think with my record of cars I should get one, I have had 9 cars and not one has been around for 6 months! it'd cost me a fortune to get it transferred etc all the time. I did want R88 FMC but now I've decided I want a Bm so havin FMC on the plate wouldnt make sense lol!

private plates are for people with personality disorders
1) why do you want your cars make/marque on the number plate? - don't you think we are bright enough to know? can't you remember what kind of car you have?
2) why would you want your initials on a car? Do you get confused in the car park? Do you think we want to know your initials?
3) why do you want to hide the age of your car? definate psycological problems here - I'm happy that everyone knows that I drive a car made in 1989, or 1983, or 1970, or 2000 for that matter
strangely I have a proper private number plate from the 1950s on retention; it was a bargain, and I'm quite happy to make money out of people who'd rather spend money on the plate rather than the car
when I bought my BMW, it had an A10 plate on it - I advertised it on Ebay and made a few 100 GBP; thanks, number plate snobs

I have G99 APB-original numberplate from the start and its etched on all the windows/lights.Had planned to change it to a 3 digit N.I. plate but its grown on me.
I am in Queensland, Australia and have a personalised plate, I guess that is the same as a private plate? Mine is just my initials and the last to digits of my birth year in gold on a black plate (my 323i is black and has gold stripes because it is a JPS, used to have gold wheels too). It's the slim version on the front (shorter in height). At the time I got it I couldn't get the BMW, 323, or E30 ones I tried. I might not have tried all of them though.

But some prefer getting inside a women rather than a girl. Figuratively speaking of course.
Once driven, forever smitten.

I was bought a plate before I planned to ever get an E30, It's M30 MGA so it's too new to put on, It doesn't really even count as a private plate but It means something to me. I was thinking I'd like E30 MAB for Delphin but her number is etched all over her so I'm not sure.

yes I think we're going to the wrong place here...
E30Mark you KNOW I meant looking 18 in car-years is worse than looking 14 in car years, if i can put myself in a female car-mind - why am I even thinking about this?

It can often be just a matter of changing the look of the thing. In the family we have 2 red e34 525is, with identical paint, identical wheels, and almost identical interior (one auto one manual). The manual has "PKW525" on it, because she who owns it thinks its cute that PKW is german for "car", and its a 525.
The other is getting 1935 plates to tribute its owners first ever car, back in that year. Both are white letters on black plates, which looks much better than the maroon on white we have in queensland here.
My black E30 still has its normal plates, but Ive got a set of binary code number plates, also white letters on black OII001. Doesnt say anything, just looks plain and says a little something about my computer geekyness. The advantage, is that dislexic or not, no copper, can recognise and remember that plate as it speeds by. The 1s and Is look absolutely identical as do the 0s and Os. Thats smarts
Matches the car too. Wouldnt have to do it if our normal plates didnt look like crap.

PanzerKaufWagen?
I'm right with you on number plates that are DIFFICULT to read (another reason NOT to have a private plate in the UK)
but I'm pretty sure the Police could track you down fairly easily if they know it's an E30 with just 0s and 1s in the plate
(right, back outside; I needed a break from the HOT HOT sun - yes dear Aussies it's sunny here in the UK!)

i'm proud of driving an old car that can kick the arse of new ones.well i was and will be again when its fixed.lol
but no matter what plate you put on every one knows its an old car.
i may be swayed by a plate with ref to the car eg E30 ??? or my own name but the chance of me being able to afford one r very slim.
why is it so HOT. i live in the north on a hill and its 28c whats with that. wheres the rain gone?

No need to put the original on retention. The DVLA will normally reissue the original whan you take the private plate off, especially if you give them a good reason (like etched windows).A1BMW325iSport wrote:

wanna hear summin funny..
over here u can literally buy ANY plate u want. there are no conformaties to prefix or number series length.
u can have anything u want as long as its one word and fits on a plate!!!
costs about Ԛ£800 for 10 years and then is required for re-registering on the same plate

I dont have a personalised number plate I dont see the point.
I mean anyone in the know is going to know that the E30 was only built between X and Y so its never going to pass for a new car.
The money can be spent on better things for the car.
At the end of the day, each to his own
I used to run Mk1 Cortina's what the point of a personalised number on one of those

That isn't the object (in my case). I suppose it's a bit like you don't ask a woman her age.Cotty180 wrote:its never going to pass for a new car.
As far as I'm concerned, I don't give a fudge how old any car is. What's important to me is the condition of the car. Modern cars (>1990 for example) are dull in the extreme and I don't think I'll ever run one.
I've found that if you run (say) a '86 D plater, all you get is "why don't you get a newer car? Can't you afford it?" Or "You're a businessman, why haven't you got a better car?" Usually this comes from people who don't have a bloody clue about cars. I could go out tomorrow and spend Ԛ£20k on a new car, but I actually choose not to. Most "new car snobs" haven't a clue that my Touring is 14 years old, therefore they don't ask me damn fool questions.

I'm in a similar position, and any other car than an E30, I would probably buy about two years old.
I run my "best" E30 touring on a personal plate ( four numbers, two letters, aquired several years ago for free), and most people haven't got a clue how old it is.
The things I insist on, on my car's, are that they should be mechanically perfect, with everything working properly (headlamp levellers excepted) including things like pad wear indicators and headlamp wipers, and that the bodywork should be as good as new from a distance of about twenty metres, if not always entirely visible under the muck.
