When I was about 16, my dad bought a Volvo 850 turbo AWD.

At the time, it seemed like a rocket ship to me. Anyway, I couldn't drive being 16, and at 17 the insurance would've been horrendous....plus he didn't want me driving his new car.

Anyway, the years went by and I started buying cars, a GT6 @19, a 306 @21, a 2.0ESP Focus @21 (hated the peugeot) a 205 1.9 GTi @22 and finally the 325i@24.

Obviously my cars have been getting quicker and quicker over the years whilst his has stayed the same.

Even so, when I got the chance to drive it today having reached 25 in April, I jumped at it and.........well, it wasn't as fast as the BMW, has a really jumpy clutch with a looooong pedal travel but no modulation at all, a cronically long gear throw and steering that's a bit vague around centre, and a bit dead in corners.

That said, having a turbo on a petrol car was a first for me, it was great, had a race against some suit in a Rover 800 :D he got the jump off the lights, I finally managed to bounce into motion in 1st, foot off clutch, loud pedal planted (by this time Rover boy's about 3/4 of a car length ahead) faint whistle and we're off! :)

Can't wait 'till Brown's finished!

There, aren't you glad you read that

cool story mate 8)

Driving turbo cars is fun and frustrating especially when you're waiting for the turbo to spool up. Accidently dump the clutch too early pulling onto a roundabout and watch in terror as you see a car coming to you on the roundabout and then suddenly.........we're off, beeping horn just a dim noise in the background.

Also find myself doing the classic case of boost driving. Example, you pull away at a sensible pace, get it in 2nd and there's a set of lights turning red up ahead. You see this, but still have to wait to get the boost in and the wee shove in the back before you go on the brakes!

I know this sounds bad, but I prefer the Volvo turbos with an auto box. In the family we had an 850T5 auto which was a screamer... but many years before that my Dad had a brand new 760 Turbo auto. This was a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder turbo on an H plate... that thing used to go like the wind!

Volvo turbos are excellent.

I know what you mean!!

Working at the car auctions i got the chance to drive lots of 'interesting' cars, but the best ever (in terms of Heroness) was a Bentley turbo.

It was on a D plate and looked amazing

got in it and loved the v8 growl-sitting there like a pimp :bling:

got on the sliproad for the motorway, and let it rip.....

took nearly 1/4 of mile to get the back-end under control again 8O 8O

(the 3 speed COLUMN SHIFT auto box didnt help either)

Suspension was too soft and the engine was too noisy for such a type of car

however , it was a beast  :D

best turbo i have ever driven was a Merc Sprinter LWB with the 3.0CDI turbo in it-we pulled the overboost pipe off it and had an indicated 125 outta it   sounded like a sick jet fighter on overrun

When my old man sold his business a 6 years back, he splashed out on a '97 Bentley Turbo. This had the revised suspension, and was an extremely fast car.

I remember having to take him and my Mum out one evening for a dinner they were going to. Drove very sedately all the way there, and as soon as I dropped them off and was out of sight, I let it rip. OH MY GOD! I scared myself silly! The sound the turbos made was awseome. and when you let off, the wastegates chugged and made your skin tingle. The speed that car could reach in a matter of a few seconds was astonishing.

Easily the fastest / best car I've ever driven. And take into account the utter luxury that you get as well, it's easily a contender for the best 'all round' car in the world. Hard to beat.

Giles.

lol, I had exactly the same problem once, ended up facing the wrong way on a roundabout at rush hour.

It was a while ago now but I don't think mine was rotoflex.....was that the doughnut thingy?

one of my long term hero's was a tvr wedge
a number of years later funds allowed the purchase of a tvr 450se,
what a let down.
12 months later it was swapped for a rs500, different league!

The guy i do some work for in italy has a Volvo 850 T5 that he lets me and my dad drive. Wicked fun in a straight line but its THE worst car ive ever driven round a corner! EVER! Accellerate hard and dump the clutch and change up - pshhhhhh!!! wastegate sound is awesome on them!
