im just wondering what is the knight rider type bar of lights under the mph and rev tachometers? it has 5 green lights 1 yellow and 1 red. when i turn my ignition on im in the green but i need to know what it is for. please can someone help. thanks you.

Service indicator, goes down until it pops up with 'inspection' or whatever

You're talking about Service Interval lights.

They shows when you should perform service to your car. (when lights are yellow or red)

ok brilliant thanks ppl. so how would those lights go out? what would i need to service in order to put them back to green?

lights will go out themselves every few thousand mile.its just a countdown until the service

im guessing being up in the green is better than being in the low half of the green.

...and you can reset them yourself when you do a service. so a search on here to find out how, you only need a length of wire :D

thanks gareth, also another quick question, doing an oil change on sat but wondering what is the best oil for the 325i was thinking 10w 40? what do you or any other members think? lovin big bro lol.

or just ignore them, service yourself (obviously-duh) and think of them as pretty lights :D

They'll stay on red.

In my 320i I use 10w40 oil! :D

Service indicator lights take information from;the dash clock(to measure time),the speedo(to measure distance), the temperature gauge(to measure cold/hot starts) and the rev counter(to measure engine speed).This information is computed by the indicator's inards and it puts lights out according to usage.If you consistantly cover short distances in a low gear at high rpm your lights will go out quicker than if you drive at modest engine speeds until the engine is properly warm and have few cold starts.A re-setting tool is available(I bought mine on ebay) for a few quid,and is much safer to use than a piece of wire.
