I see these every time i type m10 into ebay... I'm pretty sure its a very dodgy mod and will probably kill the engine and its also very expensive for a bit of sheet metal........
But do any of you have any other opions? Is it the performance mod that we have all be looking for?

So do you think it would do any damage?
Its pretty easy to get my oil light on while cornering hard...even when the oil is at the right level.

I dont think this will make any differance to oil starvation due to cornering.
If you read the ad it goes between the sump and block and scrapes the excess oil of the crank, the whole oil misting thing is a bit of a myth/unknown anyway. These devices have been shown to have a small advantage on highly tuned high revving race engines, but wether that will translate down to the humble M10 - hmmm I'm doubt full.

this isnt the thing that prevent surge .
the baffles are a few metal walls that stops oil from flowing from one side to the other with ease ,
this is like an oil skimmer of a chemical cleaner
its a good idea
not sure if it would work ! or even if they are any good from ebay!

The theory's sound from what I can gather, probably more use with a dry sump possibly though?
I read a while ago about one of these bike engine V8 things. The manufacturers were saying that each 4cyl engine made about 150bhp (can't remember exactly) so they were hoping for about 300bhp with two engines stuck together.
They were a bit surprised to find more like 350bhp when they dyno'd it, apparently the extra 50bhp came from the fact that they'd fitted a dry sump to it!

Think these are some thing different to crank scrapers, as on the above website they sayt you can have both. From what i understand a Windage tray, make it in to a kindof dry sump, while a crank scraper scrap's the excess oil from the crank...windage trays

sound good these things...... could just be pointless hype though.... have to ask someone with engine building experience and someone who is not trying to sell u one LOL
i reckon id consider getting one

As long as its not going to do any damage then they could be a good thing. Might satrt asking people who have bought them off the guy..
I doubt they will make much difference, aircooled VWs have some serious oil starvation problems due to surge and even the VW tuners reckon that windage trays are mostly a hinderance for oil returning to the sump where its needed.
As for a fine oil mist being a problem - 2 stroke engines rely entirely on a fine mist to lubricate all moving parts and they dont seem to have that much of a problem with drag.
Look at bike engines spinning to over 10,000 rpm & producing over 130hp/litre - unless someone knows differently they dont usually use horizontal windage trays??
Maybe a set of vertical baffles would help reduce oil surge during cornering?

BMW engines are using more and more windage control and even though it may not appear the same, they are using crank scraper technology as are most of the OEM manufacturers on stock engines -- never mind racing engines. Pictures of some examples below -- extremely common technology.Gwynleym10 wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... gory=46098

Here is a recent letter from a customer in Australia who purchased one of the M10 scrapers:
Monday, June 12th, 2006
Hi Kevin
I recently bought from you a scraper for my BMW 2002 Historic Race Car (M10 engine), fitted it last week, and competed with the car just last weekend.
How does an extra 600 rpm at the end of the main straights sound???
My lap times were consistently better by one second per lap, and over 3 races, of 5, 6, and 10 laps each, I posted 8 laps betted than my previous best.
Engine and oil temperatures were lower than before (same ambient conditions).
The engine feels like it has been fitted with a lightweight flywheel etc etc...
All I can say, is THANKYOU !!!!!!!!!!!!! The best $49.95 I have ever spent !
You may well get some orders from fellow 2002 racers here in Australia.
Cheers
Bill Cutler

Here is a stock crank scraper in the V10 Viper engine:

Here is a picture of a windage tray with scraper louvers from a Dodge 3.5 -- you can even see the rod cutouts:

Last, but not least, here is a windage tray with scraper louvers from an M3 -- an evolution of the M10, in fact -- I really don't make this stuff up, gentlemen -- and I might add that BMW charges more for this stamped part than I do for mine. I am not sure what else to say??

I had quite a few hits on my site from this forum in the past few days which is what brought this to my attention.
Not everything on eBay is dodgy -- a lot of top BMW racers are running with our products. Many thousands of other racers as well -- eBay sales are a smaller and smaller percentage. It is a great place to start a small business, though. The gentleman across the way from me sells custom grills on eBay and I am quite sure he is a millionaire now. New Ferrari in his garage in any event.

Ah, yes, thanks. I see that someone's vector analysis is neglecting some key players.Andy335Touring wrote:There was anouther thread on about this last week, i posted a link to his site i think ?Gwynleym10 wrote:
