HI Nav
I think that alpina had smaller at the front, and larger at the rear, and that it helped with the stability of the car.
f you go too wide at the front, your car will tramline a lot due to there being so much contact with the road. You will feel every bump through the steering wheel, and the car may often follow the contours of the road which lorrys have left due to wear and tear!
Dont go too wide at the front in my opinion!

cheers guys, yep jesus, the j just stands for the width in inches. i have no idea why j though
.
i was worried about tramlining, so i will probably go for 7.5. i just like the deep dish look though.

IIRC, the "J" is the type of lip on the rim - virtually all rims are J though these days.

i believe tramlining is much more affected by profile than width of tyre/wheel...tramlining is caused by the inability of the tyre to deform to the shape of the road and absorb the imperfection...hence the wheel instead turns itself to fit in to its most natural position...a wide tyre would have no difference to a thin tyre, unless you are saying the tramlines will be wide enough that a thin tyre will have plenty of room for manoeuvre and the wide tyre will touch the edges easily. and that's quite dependent on an individual tramline, so probably not possible to say such generalised statements like 'wide tyres tramline more' (unless you have a reason i don't know about, and i don't claim to be an expert

its true about wat quaser says, like the alpina came with narrower fronts and wider rears, its for handling/performance/stability, most race cars have this setup like the F1 cars
I also think if u get dished wheels if the front are narower and the rears are wide then it looks realy good too
gives an effect of em being wider

nav,
i have 8.5 all round on mine with et15 offset, the backs are inside the arch's but the front's stick out too much ( they were bought for a different car)
the 'j' is for where the 'well' is on the wheel
