I think the thing that makes you think you are fast is the error on the speedo. There is a HUGE difference between reaching 50mph and 60mph. So say you speedo is out by 10% you are only doing 54mph, then you are running on 17" wheels with the wrong profile thats a further 2% out(maybe just guessing here).

To put this into perspective, my audi s4 avant claims it does 0-80kmhs(0-50mph) in 4.7 seconds
BUT...........................to get to 0-100kmhs (0-62) its 7.1

As you can see there is a 2.4 second difference between the two times, a high proportion of the total time. The slower a car is the long that difference is. I can see how its concievable to think that your 325i does 0-60 in 6/6.5 seconds on a clock and using the speedo...

In real life...Naa afraid not :o

Also, the weight reduction issue - wouldnt u need to take into account the weight of the driver (i was under the impression when mags do their tests, thay have the added weight of a passenger for some reason). To get the bhp to weight gains, you would need to take into account the driver and reduce his/her weight from the car (i thought). cool thread though..

orangecurry: think im looking at it all wrong - the wheels act as another gear to the diff (making the speedo out). bigger wheels will have further to travel. hmmm bigger wheels = better top-end

It's more the weight which is the problem of big wheels.

What if you had super grip tyres and wheels the size of golf balls winkeye
id think the 0-62 time would be more believable

Yeah it's getting to be a bit of a yawn now but it's also keeping me interested :o :o i also spend alot of time on a e31 forum, your average 8 packs around 300 bph so these guys fit an upgrade chip promising a 15% improvment so without doing a rolling road test they start spouting their claimed o-60 times & their seat of the pants timed runs.

Everyone seems to add 15% to 300 bhp & end up with a 345 hp monster just because they have been relieved of Ԛ£300 + & would dearly love to believe the promised improvements 8O

This year i fitted a 400 + HP Supercharger to my 840 the result is a tremendous improvment over stock but once rolling roaded didn't quite live up to the figures published.

The manufacturer claimed a 0 to 60 in 5.1 secs, try as i might i cannot get below 5.4 secs :chuckle: and this useing a G-tec performance meter , not some out of time dash computer!

If your'e going to make this claims then PLEASE do some research 1st or this weekend do the timed run at Santa Pod & bolster your Claim :D

5.4 seconds is good going dude!
The claimed 5.1 seconds might have been done on a grippier surface, or with grippier tyres, or in more suitable conditions etc.
I'd be happy with that myself!

Good work! :D

Have you done a timed quarter mile?

No mate i havn't yet managed to do the 1/4 mile run .

The day i choose to do the previously mentioned timed runs i went up to my local industrial estate on a sunday afternoon i got the G-tec set & buried the pedal in the shag pile 8O these babies wernt ment for such brutality 8O 7 as soon as the speedo was approaching 60mph some fecking idiot on a push bike came straight acrioss the road in front of me Bastards!!! dont they know that Sunday afternoons are for your performance testing

So with that & nearly crapping myself i haven't yet re-fixed the G-tec

These G-tec gadgets also calibrate 0-100& 100-0[ accleration & braking] + your 1/4 mile times! i'm really impressed, i recon if i go on a diet & throw some of the luxurious extras out of the car i may yet get under 5 secs to 60 :woohoo:

That G-tec thing sounds great!
What exactly is it (excuse my ignorance) and, if you don't mind me asking, how much was it to buy?

The G tec plugs in your ciggie lighter socket & is a mini sought of performance computer, you need to input the cars weght in kgs etc, it does a count down then you hit it!!! get up to 60 or 100 mph then slow down gradually it then tells you the times achieved, easy as that.

I got mine from E bay as new condition Ԛ£55 cost around Ԛ£ 175 when new 8O

I have a Transport Source Book of original road tests of the E30s done by the likes of Autocar, Motor, etc.

They reckon a standard 325i does 0-60 in 7.4 sec, a C2 Alpina 2.5 does it in 6.7 sec (essentially a standard 525i engine with close-ratio ZF gearbox - introduced before the 325i came to market) and a C2 Alpina 2.7 does it in 6.8 sec (Motor magazine, April 19, 1986).

The obc may be an 80's relic but I shouldn't imagine the stopwatch is that innaccurate, if the main clock keeps good time.

If the engine's been kept in a reasonable state of tune there's no reason why such acceleration figures shouldn't still be achievable, given the right conditions.

how accurate are these g-tec timers?they sound interesting.with regards to the size of the wheels, usually for every inch inrease in the wheel diameter you drop a profle size on the tyre so it keeps the rolling radius roughly the same so it wouldnt affect times that much and a lot will come down to gearing as well.i reckon my cossie touring would do 0-60 in about late 5's to 6 seconds even though ive got nearly 50% more power than a standard cossie that will do 0-60 in 6.1 although ive not had it timed yet

I can't vouch for their accuracy but when i 1st tried it my times were lower than expected but still good & probably more realistic

I have a g-tech and found that they are really only accurate if you have the weight of the car with in 10 lbs. I have the road race model it spews all kinds of cool useless info winkeye
