You don't have to properly hammer it, just go at a pace which you feel comfortable.
If your engine has been nicely rebuilt, it'll be fine!
You don't have to get special insurance, but you can if you like.
Trust me, you'll love it!

My thoughts are that the Golf would spank a 325 on short sprints, i.e. traffic light grand prix or on a short track. On a long motorway blast I reckon the 325 would start to pull on the golf at 80-90+ and there's no way a 325 would punish a nimble vtec screamer like dave has

Hmmm....Davenotouring...Your civic looks a bit "modified", is it?
Also a Civic VTEC produces over 150bhp IIRC, in a car weighing around or just less than 1000Kg...That is significantly different to a Golf GTI producing 136bhp and weighing over the 1000kg mark....
Snetterton is a VERY fast power circuit....However, I'd say a lap time for a standard 325i on road tyres with no suspension or brake mods would be in the 1.35-1.40 bracket on a dry track (Kumho class C cars do around 1.28 )
That would be acheivable by a well-driven Golf, too, IMHO, as the Golf would have the edge in the corners whereas the 325 would be faster on the (long) straights...
I reckon even a standard Civic Vtec would be around 2 secs quicker around Snett...The reduced weight would be worth that on the brakes...
But a LSD would be worth around 1-2 seconds...simply at the exit of the chicane!

Civic produces 150bhp, weighs 1020kg as standard. Mine is stripped, but has a cage. Weighs about 980kg. Plus I weigh 110kg.
Dunno about Snetterton being a VERY fast circuit relative to the other circuits in the UK.
I was just saying I'd give him a 'race' in the Civic, I wasn't saying there were comparable. In theory my lack of torque should be a factor. It's only a 1.6
I don't think 14bhp is particularly significant, not when you see that the Golf makes a fair bit more torque.

We know that in real terms neither are fast cars nowadays. There will be little between them and the winner of a sprint will depend, to a large extent, on the individual condition of each car. It is more a question of what you prefer to drive - front wheel drive golf or rear wheel drive BMW.Tyson wrote:Another question regarding the m20 motor. My best friend has a Vw golf 2 gti (16valve-136hp).He has difficulties with me switching from our vw concept into an e30 but i can't help it.Fell in love with the e30 and this zone just made it worse..My question to you all was if i will be able to beat him at a sprint cause he is trying everything to convince me not to buy an e30 cause they are heavier than our vw's and i won't be able to kill him at a sprint.I just want confirmation that i will do so cause he's pissing me off
..I have only driven a 325 auto but wasn't very impressed with it maybe cause i'm not used to driving an automatic.Give me nasty m20 feedback please

Peace
I always thought the golf gti had too much torque steer which I hate and would never touch one. I find that a rear wheel drive car is much easier to throw into bends at silly speeds and use the driven rear wheel power to make it stick. Car choice (and driving style) is obviously a personal thing and that's why you're tempted by a 325i. Your mate needs to understand that if he thinks a 325i is slow, then his car is slow too.

Snetterton is very fast...take it from someone who has raced there lots...In fact, only Thruxton and Silverston GP are faster, really...
Snetterton has the longest straight on any UK circuit...
If your car is stripped it will be lighter than a standard Civic...Given that BTCC cars are given ballast of a max of 60Kg, and max ballast really does effect the performance, then the 40kg less that your car weighs over standard IS significant...
Plus having a cage adds rigidity...that helps immensly on a track.
Your lack of torque is a factor, of course, but on a racetrack power is more significant than torque....That is the reason the S14 was so successful despite its relative lack of torque!
Still feel that your Civic would be more of a match for a standard, but stripped and caged E30 325i than a Golf GTI would be....
However, if you like, I'll give it a go...My 325i is a 4dr, fully kitted 4dr SE...probably weighs in excess of 1300Kg...But the motor produces about 190bhp (torque unknown), and it runs on slightly oversize rubber (slower acceleration) of 225/50/15 size...also has no LSD, standard shocks, springs, brakes, etc...
Quite happy to come over to Snett to give it a bash....

Sounds like a great plan, not in a 'I've got a score to settle' kind of way, but the fact that must be able to drive pretty well! So it'll be interesting.
Like I say, I've not driven Snett before, so I'll need a few practice laps.
Here from the MotorSportVision website...
Sunday 12th November 2006 - Snetterton
Snetterton Open Pit Lane Track Day Ԛ£120.00 BOOK NOW
Price ain't bad either. Motorsportvision are pretty well organised judging from my Bedford day.
Up for it?

OK..sounds like a bit of Sunday fun....Timing may have to be unofficial, though, cos it is strictly "verboten" on most track days!
It will be interesting to see how my very standard road car holds up....May need to sort the rad/cooling out, before then, though....
So who is bringing the Golf GTI?

Yeah, we can either do timing if you wanna be proper
or just have a 'play' to see what happens. Timing would be quite cool though, if a bit naughty. Someone could stand in an inconspicuous manner near the start line!
Who's up for bringing a Golf then....
Maybe we should see if this could become a sort of trackday meet, get a few 325is there?
