magpie, how many hours labour am I looking at for a rear main seal? Mine is doing a good job of rust proofing the floorpan atm, but I got an advisory for it this time round

a rear crank seal will involve a fair few man hours,it depends which way the mechanic finds the easiest way of attack against the Jerry be it engine lifted and supported with box removal on a ramp which in turn involves removing of anything connected or blocking access .
next mot just get the baby wipes out clean up and go elsewhere unless you have large deposits of Iraqi currency dispensed on your land beneath the tourings evening resting place .

Actually Autohaus dropped her back yesterday but I didn't have chance to test drive until this evening. What a differenceIt was the Blue Temp Sensor after all so it's back to rock steady 750 rpm idle, no hesitation off-idle with full or part throttle. In fact, she's now got a thoroughly modern feeling throttle which I didn't realise the E30 could manage. Awesome. I'm really glad that I've got a proper BMW specialist garage in the area with two Master Techs (or ex-master techs I suppose) who grew up on E30s

Give us a clue to the location of this garage?
I'm not sure if I have the right one.
Thanks

21.7 mpg is still pretty thirsty!Morat wrote:Did about 50 miles today, car ran as sweet as you like. So chuffed. Also, OBC is now showing 21.7 mpg instead of 17.5 - check your blue temp senders folks! I was getting poor mpg long before I had any running issues.

You would have to mental to lift the engine to replace the rear main seal!magpie wrote:a rear crank seal will involve a fair few man hours,it depends which way the mechanic finds the easiest way of attack against the Jerry be it engine lifted and supported with box removal on a ramp which in turn involves removing of anything connected or blocking access .

Gearbox out every time weather its on the floor or a ramp.
If doing it on a ramp, providing the are no rusty exhaust dramas then about two hours to do a rear main seal on a 325i.
Book time is probably about 3 hours.

So much for the 2.0 and 2.5 being as uneconomical as each other then.bss325i wrote:That's about what my 325i does and both mine and morats have 3.91 ratio diffs.verde wrote:Thirsty indeed, if mine shows anything like that its getting LPGed or sent on its merry way.Cloggy Saint wrote: 21.7 mpg is still pretty thirsty!

I've got a lead foot in the E30, 25mpg is possible.Cloggy Saint wrote:So much for the 2.0 and 2.5 being as uneconomical as each other then.bss325i wrote:That's about what my 325i does and both mine and morats have 3.91 ratio diffs.verde wrote: Thirsty indeed, if mine shows anything like that its getting LPGed or sent on its merry way.
