It's simple Barry - OEM or what looks best? The piping in your photo looks great and quite period but I do agree that your car is not 100% OEM so this level of attention is a bit OTT.

i'm not against either camp, however i often fall inbween both with my OEM+ styling which has been done to my e30 IS, my e36 touring and now my compact. thats my style.
unlike yourself who doesnt like to admit you are modifying your car, and its for visual impact
white wheel, well it works for me

A friends old dolphin Sport had a standard leather M3 interior in it from the factory or at least a very early stage in its life as it was given a dealer retrim in '96.
That interior was then sold to the Sport that had the double stitch retrim as I mentioned previously in the thread.
I know two other Sports with a leather M3 interior then too. I know one had the M3 rear bench put into it but not sure about the other one.
I say double stitch the whole lot. The whole car is OEM plus at this stage

Ratch, you will never win an arguement on here with some people... particularly, Bob, Kox or Barry
Whats so wrong with modifying your car anyway Ratch... I wouldn't drive a 318iS or even any E30 apart from an M3 on a regular basis if it wasn't modified as I'd be sick of its short-commings.
Kos' OEM plus approach gave me my initial ideas for my 318iS and look how thats turning out
The double stitch interior I've seen in a Sport, I didn't like as much as the rear buckets were trimed very tightly which made them alittle bubbly rather than keeping the nice original shape to them.

If it were me Id go for double stiched purely because I think it looks better.
If I ever re trim mine I expect Id do the same.

I have to agree with most here. The only thing i regret on my car was going for piping instead of stiching and if i could afford it i would do it again without the piping

Mine has piping which I love, but I've not gone down the OEM route, so I know it won't find favour with the masses.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

I have routinely 'won' arguments with these kids Dave, that's all they are when entering into reasoned debate - because they have none.
OEM+ is just a term for people who overdosed on vile chavness and have now seen the error of their ways (no doubt in a deeply polished chromed wing) and are turning back to standard. The molestation gene still torments them so they conjure up some BS terminology about OEM+ to get away with the odd smoked light.

With the Sport seats, piping may look good I think but as the Recaros have the stitch running right around the top too, I think the stitch looks much better as the piping makes them look dated.

Cabbie's with cloth interior's came with piping.

However,if I was re-trimming in leather to a car with no known history,I would delete the piping,as it is plastic based and moves at a different temperature to leather and therefore causes splits and cracking. This is less likely to happen with a re-trim in cloth,as the cloth is more likely to be 'forgiving'.
As always,it's your car and therefore down to you what you do with it!

i'd like to think that what i've done to my cars is often one step ahead of the game, hence the reasons for picking odd ball cars as a canvas to work with, like the IS, like an e36 touring and like my compact.
i dont think i've ever had a single negative comment about any of them.
where does OEM+ come from, well its a term for people who chose to modify their cars with in the parameters of the original design, mealy enhancing what bmw did with upgrades mechanicaly and visually. ustilisng OEM parts and some times not.
in the VW worlds they push the boundires and they can get away with it, i dont hink BMW's can, only in some extream cases
you must hate the rat look, it must realy offen you

I think within the this OEM+ noise there are still some nasty things going on.
Debadging, nasty colours, wheels, dodgy trimming and the ubiquitous smoked lights.
You think I mod but an E36 steering rack, grooved discs and a maple Gear Knob is hardly modding compared to the above.
I've gone back to Orange indicators and period licence plates - scandal!

but orange indicators are gay, the e36 rack is dated, grooved discs just chew up pads and ebc pads are poo anyway and as for a maple knob.. probably one of the many knob's you've rubbed sti's over.Royalratch wrote:I think within the this OEM+ noise there are still some nasty things going on.

What has big chrome wings got to do with OEM+?
What it means is things like taking an old E30 such as my iS...
Improving it quite dramatically with parts from newer or superior BMWS such as E46 rack, shortshifter, 6 speed box, M3 interior, eccentric bushes and improved top-mounts and stuff like cruise-control and other bits that may have been availible on other E30s or later cars but didn't come on my own car.
This debate is getting boring now so could we just get back to the fact that the double stitched Recaros look far better than piping.
