PM'd about bodyshop prices etc.

I think Elephant (and most insurers) outsource their assessments to Barnetts so wouldn't expect someone else to come behind to ratify their work.

I'll keep my digits crossed for a good outcome. Gordon really knows his onions so he'll be a good man to have with you when visiting bodyshops.

Got the initial assessment costs from Bennetts - £2500.
Think that they must be using gold plated BMW bodyparts and diamond crystal lights.

Al, persevere with finding 'for sale' ads for similar spec and condition cars like yours. Mr Beemerbird wrote off his Motorbike a couple of years ago. The first pay - out offer was minimal, but after sending some evidence of current value for similar vehicles he ended up getting more than he paid for it. I think that insurance companies bank on people not doing the required legwork.

He too bought his vehicle back; the payout paid the sum they wanted for that, for the restoration, and quite a few shandys.

Just try to get it back into your possession ASAP.

They do base their repair assessments on stuff being done in approved body shops etc, which makes it seem alarmingly steep. They don't allow for the fact that your mates can and will help you out.

I think it cost my partner about £220 to get his bike back on the road, and the assessor said it went into thousands.

This actually helps you out, as the value they place on the vehicle when you want to buy it back reflects their extortionate repair assessment

Colin, this was just completed this afternoon - I've already been into Bennetts to get my folder of reciepts from the car and my Oakleys - when there I looked the chap in the eye and told him that under no circumstances should he release the car without speaking to me first - He has assured me that this will happen - I've also told Elephant this.
I phoned Elephant today and they have the £2500 assessment on file - I was told that the inhouse engineers will give this the once over, pass it onto the claims contact (Siobhan Harris - a wee Scottish lass maybe) and she will contact me on Friday/Monday to take things to the next stage i.e. Them tell me that the car is a Cat C/D and offer me a shite amount of money.
Then the fun begins. :x
Incidentally, will you all stop telling me to get the car home (you're all scaring me) - ATM there is feck all I can do about the current situation. It is on record with both the Insurers and the current holders of the car that I want to buy it back, and that it goes no-where unless I say so. I don't think I can do anymore, other that chaining myself to the bloody thing!!

Believe me I have taken hope from this - I've got about 100MB of info in my drafts folder waiting to get sent to this lot - I've scanned in the entire contents of the wallet - History/Reciepts/MOT's etc, the original bill of sale, the original advert at Old Colonel cars, about 25 ads of similar cars ranging between £2500-4500, and pics of the car before the bash. I just hope that this info, combined with my silver tongue will be enough to get what I want.

Sounds like your head is screwed on properly, so don't despair at any inital offer. After all, an offer is just an offer, for you to refuse or accept.

If I remember correctly, the second offer (once the folder of comparisons had gone in) was accepted by him indoors. We both, however, selected the higher value comparisons at the time, so bear that in mind

Best of luck with it, and keep us posted

Adi you have PM.

rix313 - cheers for the thoughts!

Good info on the book price.

"selected the higher value comparisons at the time" Beemerbird could you please explain this statement. Do you mean taking into account things like excess/additional insurance etc? I'm a bit of a virgin at this.

Quite simply, big boy ( winkeye ) we didn't bother scanning or printing any adverts for a comparable vehicle which was at that time being sold or advertised for a sub - standard amount.

As an example, Mr Beemerbird has recently bought his best mate a Kawasaki from Ebay which he got for an outstandingly bargain price. If his mate bins it tomorrow and needs to claim on the insurance, the majority, but not all of same - spec vehicles we looked at whilst price checking were considerably more expensive.

To put it simply. If some little old bloke is selling his low mileage minter copy of your car for peanuts, don't include that comparison in your info pack for the insurance. Make sure you include the Old Colonal / dreamer style figures.

An insurance company probably can't be arsed with trawling Ebay / Auto Trader / Piston Heads / Old C's / Whoever to find a smattering of lower priced vehicles when you present them with hard - copies of your findings.

Hope this helps

Yep, I re-read your post this afternoon, and kinda thought that was what you meant. I've done just that - Included in the 25 or so adverts, i've got a good spread of cars from £2800 - £8000 (mainly at the £4000 mark) so that should do the trick. Thanks honey!

On the positive side - today I spoke with a chap called Kyle at Chizfab and he has transport and the knowledge to do the work to an excellent standard, and all for a decent price. . . . At least I feel as though i'm getting somewhere, albeit very very slowly!

I personally would bin any advert lower than £4K in your position, though.

Hope it gets all sorted out for you there Al

I got my 320i back, declared as a CAT C, unfortunately the shell's not that tidy and it's got some rust here and there :(
On the upside i did get a resonable valuation for it! (£1250! before excess 8O ) considering it's a 320i, i thought that was reasonable, and managed to get the car dropped off.
It looks like the left side is bent all out of shape but the right side is good, it'll be dismantled and if there's a few parts that could be donated to sort yours, the foglight and ducting is still fine on that side unless they're already sorted.

Hope you have more luck getting yours fixed up than i did, lack of funds and space means another E30 will bite the dust :(
BMW and Opel, both RWD, both german, both good fun

Cheers mate - Yours is pretty nice too!
Might need good condition bits and pieces, and will get a list posted up here soon.

Update - fu*king c*nty bas*ards have said that i'm not allowed to buy the car back!! I smell something fishy!
Does anyone have any ideas whay they would refuse a buy back (other than the obvious reason).
fu*king raging with these useless c*nts!!

Upon reflection................Maybe i've been watching a wee bit too much of Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It. :o:
