Hi Mick, thanks for pointing me to this thread.

Yep HUI is a November 1983 build, first registered Jan 1984 on an A plate original number A215 TYU

Solid as a rock underneath, gets a new coat of underseal every year, all rusted away I think not, there is chrome under those painted bumpers.

Not bad for being in its 25th year, happy anniversary

Thanks to capri_rob and Alex for the support. I have had the car over 20 years now and it is all original metalwork. The paint has been touched in on the lower half and the bonnet.

The last time any paint was done was 1990. It was originally a press car, on long term loan to Motor magazine before BMW sold it off and a guy in Ballachulish bought it. I then bought it from Calterdon in Inverness with 40k on the clock. It now has 100k.
It has full BMW service history. Had to laugh yesterday - booked it for May for its next oil service. The girl on the counter asked me for my key. When I asked why she said it was so she could read the mileage etc   I did exlain to her that BMW did make cars without all these gismos, probably before she was born. :D

heres my dads 15th March 1983 'Y' e30, originally a 320 auto but been converted to a 325i some time in its life

styling wasn't to our taste but the running gear was sound, was just bought to use as a runaround until 2008 despite being only 30mm off the ground, as the running gear will be going into another facelift shell

a few things were done to lower the councilness by 1% like removing the shopping list on the side and the hideous grill 8O

Up until now we had some nice original cars. I was going to say that the old chromeys seem to get less abused by council types.

As it was re registered over 20 years ago from its original number of UBL 44Y then I don't mind the number been displayed.

That's number 29 then - probably the oldest E30 in use until recently. That's older than any of the 320i press cars. It was almost certainly built on the first day of RHD production, same as 001 and it would have been in the first batch across on the big boat. What a pity.
The 320i's were built first, the 323i's after a few days and the RHD 316 started in January 1983.

My first E30 was a Burgundy red 323i 2 door, registered April 1983. It had Bottletops, sports suspension, sports seats, dogleg box and LSD. The reg number was APL??Y but i can't find any record of it. A mate had a Basalt (bluey pale grey) blue Y plate 316 2 door, clock instead of a rev counter, four speed box and absolutely NO options. It still had the plastic blanking plate in the dash for the radio. Man, that thing took some abuse - Aylesbury to Potters Bar every day for 6 months and he's do it in an hour. 8O

I remember reading on here once that it was believed somebody had one of the old TRX press cars in storage somewhere. I'll see if I can dig out the thread.

In that thread the question is asked why UBL has side repeaters and other Y platers don't.
The simple answer is that when BMW took it back from Motor magazine in 1984 they updated the spec to the latest and then sold it on.
All other Y platers Ive seen do not have side repeaters as original. 401 KVW, a May 83 323i has them because when he rebuilt the car in the mid 90s he changed his wings to later ones.

I have a OSF wing NOS without the repeater hole. Shall never use it as my car has side repeaters.

My December '84 320i didn't have repeaters, but had them added when it had new wings in 2002. I thought about getting the holes in the wings welded up but tgh I thing they look a bit bare with them missing.

If TRX882Y still exists, that would be superb. This is what I'm talking about for the Chrome section - I completely missed that thread. The road test cars including that one and UBL44Y were given to key BMW employees to use for a week - my Dad drove UBL44Y for a week in early 1983 between Somerset and Bracknell, giving it a proper toasting for 1000 miles to loosen it up. They never suffered but they gave better figures against the stopwatch.

Barry - that '82 car needs saving. Would look nice in Opal green, 40mm drop, shiny chrome, polished MiM's and a 2.7. winkeye
