Not sure about the olympic brek tho. I'd have to bet Oakey £50 I'd beat him there AND win the bet to pay for it. I'd pay for my own tea though.

obviously if money wasnt an issue any sane person would take the e46 m3 .then tune that up. in my case money is an issue and i couldnt afford to hand over the sort of cash the m3 goes for in a lump sum so for me and many others its the shonky turbo'd e30 route built up over a number of years to give the little guy his occasional 'victory' over mr flash whilst kidding himself on that he'd got one over on mr flash .Andyboy wrote:Hmm. I'm going on a nice 800 mile drive this weekend. Do I take the E46 M3, 343 reliable bhp, comfy, sharp handling, 30+ mpg or some turbocharged shitheap E30 which will get about 100 miles before dumping it's guts all over the A303.
Decisions Decisions. Have any of you actually driven an E46 M3?
my lesser powered touring was a match against the same e46 m3 from a standing start.he pulled away slightly opening up a gap of about 20metres between us and it stayed the same right up to 120 when we ran out of test track .he had expected us to be even but admitted he had expected his m3 to pull away more from about 90 up so was surprised.
even with my lesser power and far better handling than that e30 turbo in the video i still wouldnt have the confidence in my car to push it to hard in the corners against the m3 because i know just how easy the e30 can lose its back end. power sliding may look cool but it doesnt help in a race against something with very advanced electronic traction and handling aids.
I once had a small victory over an E46 M3. I was in a 325i Touring (AmD chip and 3.64 diff...and a 320i badge) coming up the M1. Doing 80 in the middle lane, inside lane full of trucks. Twat in M3 comes up behind me and flashes me to pull over - yeah, like where am I going to go? The fast lane is empty you arrogant bellend.
Twat overtakes, gives me a look. His Mrs is not happy, face like a smacked arse. I let him go and then I drop the hammer. I came up behind him, 5500rpm which is 13? something and flashed, and by the time he realised what the score was, I was past, 320i boot badge glistening in the afternoon sun.
Best q car ever - a mint E28 528i on BBS splits....with a 380 bhp cammed up 3.8 M5 motor from an ex race M635CSi. F*** me that was fast.

Sleeper cars are where its @, end of
and thats where a snailed E30 wins out, its not an obvious Q car and can ruin many factory hot rods in a straight line
Garys car decimated his own Audi RS-4 in head to head testing, and as for unreliable....... mine did 38K turboed and still lives on factory gaskets now
E46 M3 is a V nice toy( indeed I have almost purchased two of the buggers ! ), and the sensible choice but thats not the b all and end all is it.....

i totally agree with that. high end cars are nice but everyone knows what they are. even if i did have the cash for something new i think id still prefer my usual type of chariot. the older slow looking car with the big power conversion. especially effective in 'estate' form.Ant wrote:Sleeper cars are where its @, end of

as for reliability its been well documented the problems i have had but thats more to do with shoddy workmanship from the engine fitter than anything else as once i had replaced the worn out parts they fitted ive not had any problems since. over 20000 miles ive now done on my cossie engine and it still never fails to put a smile on my face when called upon.
it can also be used economically everyday if driven carefully as off boost its just a 2.0 .
I suspect its smoking because of a 'wude atmospheric dump valve letting out loads of unmetered air. Its only when lifting of the accelerator.
Talking of sleepers I was in this nissan note 1.6 yesterday, when i spied some council lights of a white audi r8 a few cars ahead. I did the sensible thing of tailgate the car infront till he moved out of the way, knowing the duelcarrigeway was coming. Dropped a cog, heard a scretch of the straining 175/65 'economy/tax saving bracket' tyres and promptly dispatched said R8
He didn't stand a chance.
Back on topic, people are always mentioning the balance and poise of e30's over e36/e46...errr
