It looks fat.

Compared to the mk1, it looks fat and crap.

Yes. Fat, and crap. Buit anything can be made to look better with the right mods.

Image
A nice looking (but it took a LOT to get it that way) fat crap car.

Image
An effortlessly good looking, skinny car.

But this isnt about which is better, a mk1 or mk2. its about whats better, a mk2 or an e30. The e30 wins, hands down.

That's Vealige's Mk2, externally, it's not much changed, it's a 4 dr G60, BBS splits, a drop and a rallye front are the only changes and it's debatable if the rally front adds to the look..

Externally, Dean's Mk1, the green one, has probably had as much work as the Mk2, but as you've said it's your opinion and I prefer the Mk1 out of those two.

And between a Mk2 16v and an E30 325... It's a debate, surely, not a hands down win for the BM??

aach, who cares it's friday :D and wait, look outside, is that actual sunshine, surely not???

it is indeed Veale's g60... one of my favourite cars of all time (except the eyebrow, makes it look like johnny 5 when he's angry). I'd hardly call a front end change a small change, but thats just me. And his wheels are deeply deeply sexual.

Sun?! All I see is clouds :(

IN MY OPINION...........
how about instead of having to write this when people misunderstand you, you put your last paragraph above in your sig? winkeye

I think they both have excellent qualities which bring out heartfelt debate - therefore it doesn't matter which is 'better'; they are both winners for somebody.

i agree with orangecurry here

they are both very good cars
i have had both in the past and would happily have either gain

mk1 is a very raw beast

whereas mk 2 is less raw and more refined

but both great drivers cars and lots of fun

I've been tempted to do something along those lines... But in this case I wrongly assumed that people wouldnt take a comment like 'its fat and crap' that seriously, its hardly an in depth analysis of the ins and outs of the car...

you've got to expect people to take the other side though, otherwise a lot of threads would be one post long and where's the fun in that?

I had a late Mark 2 GTI and I loved it... it was fast (not lightning fast) handled great, sounded great and nothing went wrong with it ever... fantastically reliable. Overall probably the best car I have owned.

just to put the record straight (and yawn yes I owned one for 20k miles) the mk3 GTI 16V with 150BHP weighs 1100-odd kgs.... how much does the E30 weigh? :D

Power to weight ratios in BHP/ton (according to EVO)
mk1 = 135
mk2 16v = 127
mk3 16v = 129

I loved my Mk3 16v, had it on Koni adjustables and took it past quite a few driftking wannabe's at Donnington and Alconbury, no-one took Mk3's on track and there were a few surprised faces...

(To be even more boring the one in the pic is a Mk4)

Blimey, I bore myself sometimes... :?

i love my golf and probably will never be without a mk2 (even if it is in several boxes :D )

but i think it's unfair to compare fwd with rwd even if they are in the same price/enthusiasm bracket because the ability to wag the tail will win every time for me :D . plus there seems to be more passion amongst owners for dub's than bmw's.

oh yeah and the best bit, I bought it for 4K and traded it in 2.5 years and 35K miles later for 4.5K against my next chariot :D

Had a MK2 16v in dark metallic silver for about four years. Great car when it was running, but not reliable . Electrics and gear box problems. Very fast though. As build quality have to disagree with some posts not a patch on the E30.

If I remember the Gtis especially the 16v was just shy of 16k when new compared to 22k for e30 sport.

Classic cars though and funnily enough I got the thumbs up from a smart MK2 Gti a couple of night s ago. Sat on what looked like 17" BBS rims

Thats what i'm talking about, both the e30 and the Golf attract a similar type of person. Mutual admiration.

There has recently appeared a matt black mk2 in plymouth. The owner gives me evils whenever I drive past him.

Maybe I should top driving past his house 20 times at 4 in the morning....

The 16v's are great but the 8v is slow and very overrated. Possibly even going to the extent of not deserving a gti badge.

Speed wise a 16v is as quick as 325 but as said lacks the hero status of rwd.

mk2 golfs can look superb, smoothed, deep dish splits and slammed.

Off topic but owned a polo g40 before the 325i, and with a few engine mods it slaughtered 325i's and any other hot hatch.

It was the best car i have ever owned and i knew it was a mistake the day i sold, however rwd was calling.

I spent a fortune on it. Stage 5 charger , 65mm pulley, g60 ingectors, sns chip, big break conversion + rear disk conv, Stripped out, adjustable susprnsion etc

It really was an awesome car. One day ill own another one.

G40, the most overlooked under-rated 'hot hatch' ever!

Awesome little cars.
