if you have a spare head for something then have a go at head porting, there are loads of guides on it on the net,
look at a book call david vizard ohc ford engine tuning, itll have most of the theory that you will need to do a good head porting job,
i used it when i first did my nova 2.0 8v head and i got good results,

also wasting the lump where the head is welded onto the stem of the valve is common practivce when larger valves are not needed or posible, i did it on my nova also and reved it past 8k on a regular basis and had no problems at all,

I was after more power for my old E34 so i had the head flowed and a 284 cam.

I wanted every thing to be spot on so i had new SS valves, valve guide liners and as the valves wern't the standard ones the seats needed to be cut to match.

As you can see it wasn't cheap once you add all the parts up(head,valves(200 quid),cam with up rated valve springs/uprated spring retainers/peened rockers, rocker shafts,ETC.

I would have been better off doing the 335 swap first because it's a bigger performance gain.

Oh and i was going to get the head bloke to make me some custom valves but he was very busy and i wanted my head back.

He recomended REC for the valves, basically the same as stock but +1mm on the exhaust valve and he had them in stock.

A 3 angle grind will give a smoother flow past the valve, and a 5 angle grind would be better still.
so do they just grind the seat a bit or the valve itself?

Thanks

what about the exhaust manifold? Do i need a set of headers/extractors to be able to match them to the head?

It's the seat area. No grinding of the valve is done.
