Small Update;
So I spoke to the gentleman's insurance company, Hastings...and played dumb (not difficult to do)...I asked the guy to explain exactly what happens and said I was concerned about rumours I had heard about having old cars written off etc...
He said they normally only consider write off's if the value of the repair is 70% or more of the value of the car also taking into account the type of damage...if there is a possibility of structural repair and therefore potential added cost then they are cautious...they will consider a cash in lieu settlement and not write the car off...regardless of write off I get paid out and keep my car as his customer has admitted full liability...
The estimate for repair that I have is for £2000 so at 70% they would value my car at £2860...which in my opinion is ludicrous...but lets see...the assessor is coming round on Friday

Have adverts for similar cars ready for the assessor Gav. He may not be interested but be clear in what YOU consider the car is worth.

I've been in touch with your insurer and we have reached an agreement on your car. Is it alright if I pick it up on Saturday, Gavla?...Gavla wrote:Wish me luck...assesor is coming round sometime tomorrow...this is what they will see...

So I met with the assesor John...
He values the car at between £5k - £6k and said that he is not in the business of writing off good condition classic cars.
Long story short...he is going to do his own estimate based on everything we have discussed and if the estimate is at write off value he will lower it and suggest a cash settlement so that the car does not get written off.
Sounds good to me!

I would imagine it will cost all of that to get a good repair done, not sure i would be happy with that.Gavla wrote:So the final verdict is a cash settlement of +- £1850...

Isn't that the point, the cheque covers the cost of the repair?ajay wrote:I would imagine it will cost all of that to get a good repair done, not sure i would be happy with that.Gavla wrote:So the final verdict is a cash settlement of +- £1850...

Yes, but once you have the cheque its your responsibility to find a garage capable of delivering a top job for that money, with no distinguishable flaws that ultimately de value the car, ie: paint blending or poor panel replacement/repairs & sourcing another startec rear light ( may have to buy a pair for just one light), also the inconvenience ( weather it is or not) since the crash your vehicle has not and will not be available to you until repaired, i would want that taken into account in the settlement, or another vehicle provided by them for the duration of the repair, my time off work to meet the loss adjuster too, or its just not worth it. For that amount of money they got off lightly!

The startecs are unfortunately a write off and are not part of the settlement as they are not original BMW...
The money will cover the repair to the rear and the front...(i smacked my passenger wing) so I am happy with that.
No hassle...no inconvenience...no waiting about...I should have the car back in a week or 2...job done...

I managed to get a passenger side startec light in good condition off German ebay...result!

Just to put things into perspective...
Before I was rear ended I was looking at front body repairs, front Mtech kit, boot lid and horse shoe costing me +- £950...
Now all included means I pay out +-£150...insurance will cover the rest...

That's a bit of a result in the end really. Ok the car has had a repair but if it's done well it'll not make much difference.

I have been assured that no one will be able to tell that it has been repaired...my only concern was that it was going to be written off! Turd saved!
