Other than the S14/M88/S38 engined stuff, all Hartges Engines are near identical spec to Alpina engines.steve_k wrote:well there is thatbss325i wrote:Epic bulkhead bodgery!steve_k wrote:all this rowing about alpina,![]()

I consider Sytner cars proper Alpinas cars only confused about TWR as there is a E21 335i on another forum and the owner was adamant it's a TWR not Alpina despite having the full kit and rimz etc.bss325i wrote:As much as a Sytner built car.87mtech27 wrote:Are the early Alpinas put together by TWR considered the real deal?
TWR were the Alpina UK concessionairs up to 1983 before Sytner took over. All UK sold RHD E21 Alpinas were TWR cars.87mtech27 wrote:I consider Sytner cars proper Alpinas cars only confused about TWR as there is a E21 335i on another forum and the owner was adamant it's a TWR not Alpina despite having the full kit and rimz etc.bss325i wrote:As much as a Sytner built car.87mtech27 wrote:Are the early Alpinas put together by TWR considered the real deal?
There were proper E28 B9 3.5'a sold by TWR but that E21 335i was not an official Alpina model, the only E21's that were, was the C1 2.3 and LHD only B6 2.8.
TWR offered the 240bhp E28 B9 engine as a conversion for the E21 as well as the 210 bhp 2.8.
I see what you mean I think
... Since Alpina themselves didn't offer a E21 '335i' or E21 'B6 3.5' model (the E21 335i being aTWR idea) and without Alpina Buchloe blessing it was therefore not an Alpina car rather a E21 tuned by TWR with Alpina parts.
BTW am I correct in considering SA 333i and 325iS Alpina cars?

Exactly right regards the E21 335i.
As for the SA E30 333i and 325iS, no they are not Alpina cars, they were designed by BMW SA with the help of Alpina and BMW Motorsport.
The 333i uses many parts from the pre sept '87 B6 3.5 and the 325iS used the C2/B3 2.7 engine.

the 333i has many more Alpina parts than any UK built C2 ever had, or the euro B3 for that matter, in the UK did we see a 325i with a factory installed 3.2 M30 ?
nope we just got a 325i with extra's to make them sell hence the 325i sport, it's nothing but a sales gimmick or it was back when i was a kid staring through the window of my local dealer”¦
the C2 was a smaller step up the ladder, with it's stroked donk
fact is.. SA got more as far as 3 series were sold.. they were making up for the loss of the M3 they weren't allowed to have for legal reasons”¦

Hartge weren't aiming towards luxury cars, their input was to go fast and something they did very, very well, sadly they didn't fit in well with BMW's plans at that time ..
check out the H36 M3 with an M5 engine it was purely mental 20 some years ago”¦ the b6s could never catch it, they made BMW look silly with their own products..
Alpina on the other hand did make nice spoilers”¦.

Hartge is more wild with their engine mods as they don't have to worry too much about BMW warranty (as you'd lose it anyway with Hartge).
I have a magazine article which pitched the Alpina C2 2.7 vs Hartge H27 and iirc the Hartge was considered to be more lively (due wilder cam or tune can't remember which).

I thought even you would know by know the story of how the 333i came about and the 325iS for that matter.
They are not official Alpina cars and that's a fact, not something I've decided!
Yes the 333i uses some Alpina parts which I said and was developed with the help of Alpina like i said although it doesn't have an Alpina engine save for the exhaust, Inlet and some instalation parts.
And the 325iS only had the Alpina engine.
And as for the UK not seeing a factory installed M30 well of course not, we got the M3 and it's because SA never got the M3 why the 333i and 325i came about.
There were a handful of M30 Powered Alpinas sold new in the UK though.

From what I can gather, import duties are very high in SA so they have their own factory, plant Roslyn to make normal series production models and I guess the limited number of sales that the M3 would have brought was not enough to justify production.jamie-o-connell wrote:why didnt SA get the m3?bss325i wrote:Eh? They never got the full E30 convertible either only the Baur conversion.
Oddly though they did get 96 E28 M5's but I guess these were easy to facilitate as they were standard bodied cars unlike an M3.
SA has always had oddball versions of European cars, 3.0 V6 cortinas, v8 capris and sierras, E12 5 series with complete E28 interiors and some odd VW stuff as well, all built in SA.

they were still manufacturing the MK 1 golf up to a few years ago - always wondered if there is a market for those over hear as you can pick up ones quite cheap at the mo with the pounds vs rand rate.

I should probably wash the Richmond out of the Disastras carpet before it goes to it's new home but I won't.
As for the VAG scene, they put anything up there. They're complete animals.
