Bought one of the Meat and Doria pumps from CP4L with a decent ish discount.

It has however arrived today in a box which has clearly been opened and bashed about :x

The pump itself is in a plastic sealed bag that you have to tear to break it open so it looks like it is new, but I'm not overly happy that it appears to be an item which has either been already sold and returned or opened up in the past for some reason.

It also has connection poles with screw on nuts - it appears no soldering is necessary unless I'm missing something.

You will understand when you see the old pump, it does not have studs but 2 terminals that are one piece with the wire. I've put ringed male blade terminals I had laying around on the studs and crimped ish and soldered the wires to female spade connectors then soldered the connection between the two. Ring terminals would be easier but the wire gauge is tiny... If you have a drawer with electrical bits you will make something work :D

I forgot to mention that the bigger stud is the negative. Don't forget to open the fuel cap to relieve pressure as well as pulling the pump's fuse and starting the car until it stalls then disconnect the battery negative terminal.

Thanks for your advice I'm going to have a crack at this on Saturday afternoon all being well.

I have an old toolbox full of bits of wire and electrical connections so should be able to come up with some sort of solution :D

Considering the amount of f**k ups ECP make on a daily basis its quite the norm to have parts delivered in previously opened boxes and sometimes the parts have been partially fitted too

this is the M&D one I bought, in tank for facelift cars.

£94.50 from cp4l but if you spend over £100 there is a voucher code on the homepage for £15 off.

Interestingly, when I bring that up on the CP4L website, where the page opens on my laptop with a E30 325 touring as the selected car, it gives a red warning that " this part will not fit the vehicle which you currently have selected"!

Strange, when I do the same rather than using my reg number it brings up 4 pumps including this one, the most expensive appears to be the entire assembly rather than just the pump, the other 2 are specified for up to 07/1987 - I.e pre facelift.

It looks right anyway I will take pics as I change it if I remember

If I go to the home page and search for 'fuel pump', I get the same four pumps as you. However, if I then type the part number of the M&D one into the 'search' box at the top of the same page, it still comes up as " this part will not fit the vehicle which you currently have selected"!
Obviously the site's software could do with some tweaking.

Fitted the Meat and Doria pump today. Not as straightforward as it should have been.

Getting the old one out no issues.

Once on the bench side by side the pumps look virtually identical, the only difference being on the Bosch original pump as all that is in the base of the pump is the fuel intake.
On the M&D pump as well as the intake there is a locating lug which fits into the metal plate of the cage that it all fits in.
Which basically means that the gauze on the bottom doesn't fit - the locating lug on the gauze filter is too bug to locate into the locating lug on the M&D pump.
I got round this by filing down the lug on the gauze filter so it fitted into the locating lug on the bottom of the M&D pump. In an ideal world I would have changed the gauze for a new one compatible with the M&D pump but it was clean and filing the lug to fit was easy enough just time consuming keep having to trial fit it.

The negative wire had enough on it to just put on a new ring connector which then bolted into the pump but the live wire needed extending which was a royal pain in the arse due to my soldering iron being rubbish but I got there in the end.

Fitted all back together easy, no leaks and compared to the old pump the new one is virtually silent in operation even with the cover off. I hadn't really noticed how noisy the old pump was until I heard how quiet the new one is.
Also seems to start better now so I'm happy I changed it.

For anyone thinking about doing this its a couple of hours work if you take your time.

I don't think this cover had been off since it was built I vacuumed all the crap out before starting to undo anything.

Image
If you don't want your car full of fumes a layer of thick paper towel and magnetic dish can be used as a temporary cover to stop any crap dropping in the hole and fumes getting out whilst you're swapping the pump over

Old pump soldered connections

Incompatibility between new pump and old filter, on the right of the pump you can see the lug which isn't there on the original Bosch pump And on the filter you can see the corresponding lug which is too big to fit into the lug on the pump.

Image
Lug filed down to fit. It's not pretty but it works.

Good work Rob,thanks for sharing.

I remember the first time I lifted the fuel pump cover on my last touring,I found a mouse nest on top of the pump!
