RE the flywheel bolts, they had all been ridiculously overtightened which coupled with the load spread washer between the bolts and the flywheel being too thick (not sure what it came from) meant that there was not full thread engagement and it had stripped the thread in the crank on one of the holes which meant the bolt was hanging out and causing the engine oil to leak into the bell housing contaminating the clutch friction plate.

Also as you can see from the pic below, the thicker load spread washer meant the bolts sat too far out and were hitting the clutch.

Image

All now rectified with the crank repaired, correct load spread washer, new flywheel bolts and clutch kit.

Plenty of other issues which have been/still need to be rectified...

After owning a 1971 Mk1 Mexico i learn't the lesson that above anything else a car musn't be a rot box. Mechanically as long as it's not a death trap things are relatively rectifiable. Once the rust has set in, shot blasting, welding, new panels, respray that's when things start getting expensive.

Thanks for the link on where to check for rust.

So I need to get in touch with 'Barry' and ask him if he can have a look over the car when I get it.

Yes i assume so as they have different part numbers and an auto drive plate is thinner than a manual flywheel.

Well the ole girl is in the garage after a 180 mile drive home. I love it what a hoot to drive. So easy to drive fast and the feed back is really good.

Only problem was over 30 mph the heater didn't work so I now have double pneumonia!

Big thanks to Dan for checking the car out, really reassuring to have someone that knows what they're doing looking at it.

Basically the car is in very good condition, the conversion needs a couple of bit doing to it, the engine is very close to the steering for one and the rear suspension tops are missing a washer.

The plan is to have some fun until next winter then it'll be back up to see Dan to have a new conversion done.

Probably heater pipes the wrong way around on the bulkhead.

This is not an uncommon state of affairs after an engine swap! The diaphragm in the electric valve doesn't take kindly to the flow being the wrong way around and bends shut when the flow gets high enough.
Doesn't inspire confidence in the rest of the work.

The seller said I had to replace something however Dan took one look and said it was the heater pipes the wrong way round. I paid £4700 and 5 x BBS alloys for £200.

TBH I have no idea what these are worth but under 5k for something that looks good, is a hoot to drive and the details like seats etc are good quality

As i mentioned to me it was the bodywork quality that was important and the car is top notch in that department

As I guessed a page or so back the conversion is a cheap lash up and needs ripping apart and starting again, but the body really is in top condition, its had some proper paedo spec detailing done and it doesnt show a blemish for it, the car has obviously been dry stored for most of its life, I didnt rip it to bits, or the seller :) but after a quick look underneath, around the engine bay, roof, and in the footwells etc you get a good feel for how the rest of the car will be.
Im sure Ian will get it sorted out and turned into a top quality converted car

All will be rectified in time.

I need to have a run through with Dan on pm about what needs doing now, then I'll go and see Barry as he's closest and then as said winter 2015 it'll be going to have a new conversion done.

I'm still happy enough and as long as it doesn't kill me or leave me stranded somewhere then alls okay. I'm seeing this as the starting point of something, not the end point.

This car is now with me for the long term and everything doesn't have to be done now. The car is in immaculate condition and that to me is the main point.

Yes I probably did pay over the top but it's not the end of the world, I'm not selling it so I'm not going to realise a profit or loss
