E30 m3 or porsche 993

993 is definitely a different kettle of fish.
Raced a 964 RS and its acceleration and handling was amazing for a car that has only 260 horses, killed the E30 M3 215bhp was too different leagues and I can only imagine the 993 would be just as good.
Too different types of car and comes down to personal preference and how deep the pockets are. If it cost £1k to fix on your E30 M3 it cost £5k to fix on the 993 a˜a

That's a fair point. I've heard from many sources that upkeep will be much higher, the m3 is relatively easy to work on, but the porker is a it more specialised. I think the fact is the reason why I'm asking for opinions is that deep down don't want to sell the m3 because of all the effort and money gone into getting it the way it is now, and don't really want to go through the same thourough restoration procedure as with the m3, but hey, we are all car nuts after all!

Porsche tyres will cost 200 each!
M3 ones less than half that.
Porsche parts are mega expensive. But they are very well built cars and generally better cared for than m3s have been.

Not a 993, but I had a 964T. Lovely car but I sold it and purchased an M3, and I wouldn't go back. it was horrifically expensive to run and although it was great to drive, once you got over the initial excitement of the speed, the M3 is just more rewarding to drive. A 993 RS or Turbo would be a worthy swap if you have to try a Porsche, but I wouldn't swap an M3 for any of the other models.

Bennydotc, wow your old 964 looks amazing, collected my car today and the drive back was great! Missed the car like a little person. And yeah the m3 is really good fun, but it's interesting you say that you would never go back to the Porsches from an m3, would it be just the cost of running your taking into account or the overall driving experience? Took my uncles 3.2 carrera for a spin a few weeks back and the sensation of the engine being in the back was great, but no sideways action, just pure grip grip grip! So I presume the 993 must be an overall better experience. Albeit a little more refined. This decission is proving to be more difficult than I thought.
It's partly cost but I think the main thing is being able to enjoy the M3 at normal road speeds. The Porsche was epic but you had to be going Mach 3 to really enjoy it. It was really superb on track days but on the road it became a bit of a chore pottering around. I guess with a non turbo 993 you wouldn't have that issue so much.
The M3 is a funny one really. When I first purchased it I was pretty underwhelmed but they grow on you. I don't think you can appreciate the M3 on a quick test drive, or an extended test drive for that matter. After a while it just starts to feel so "right". Not sure if it's rose tinted specs or what but I just love it. I never got that with the Porsche for whatever reason. If you've had yours for a while you'll know what I'm talking about I guess.
Good luck with the decision anyway, it's a tough one

I'd go for a 993 all day long! The 993 has been my dream car ever since I can remember - in fact ever since they came out as new (am now 30). Although I'd have to say I'd ideally like to hold out for a wide-bodied S before I got one... will be a few years yet!
Oddly enough I've noticed here and there that a lot of e30 enthusiasts share the same love for the 993 911 in particular. Don't know what it is since they look so different. Anyone else ever noticed this?

I don't know much about Porsches and only ever driven a 944 once ,but I've seen a hell of a lot of 911/933 over the last few months at various Goodwood/rolls royce events , and by far and away they look and sound much better than hundreds of other cars there also, just something about that look and raw grunty sound, I'd love a late 80s 911 , iconic

Serious, 4 star classics took about 5 days to reply to my e-mail about possibly selling my lumpy tackle.M42 wrote:The car needs for nothing, she's with 4 star classics at the moment but getting her back next week, to possibly strike a deal with the porsche owner, I suppose I should have tried to sell it privately but I didn't want to deal with the phone calls and time wasters.
That was enough to say i'm out!
