i agree with simon on the rust with golfs, much worse than an e30 form my experience. same with engines, good enough design, but not up to as many miles as a bm.
willis, my 318is has a chip, don't think even with chip and t/b a 318is is gonna be as quick as a mk2 valver i'm afraid. prob not far off, but still definitely no quicker. of course if you put a similar amount of money into performance on the golf, you could make it quicker too, and the golf's cheaper to modify than the bmw.
my mk2 glf 16v vs e30 318is

I think the gti is going to have to stay a little longer now, had the exhust done today, and sounds heavy!!!!
will hve to wait til a 318is comes along.

Ive gone through them all mk1's,mk2's golfs and e30's and from my experience a similar age mk2 golf certainly dont rust any worse than a similar age e30.They both have their prone rust spots but nothing overly major and thats probably why theres still loads on the road today.
Build quality the e30 edges it but that would be expected due to it being in the more premium segment where higher build quality is expected but the humble golf certainly dont get beat by much when it comes to build quality against the e30.Both are solidly well built cars
