Mick, do carefully check the position and alignment of the damage. By the look of that broken strap it has been that that cut the bell housing, is it possible that that piece broke on installation and the damage is purely down to that and no the clutch actually "touching" the housing.

Ok so the clutch arrived today and the presure plate no is the same as yours Mick! But the friction plate is correct to the parts list I posted up yesterday. I've just emailed the technical team for help and advice - and sent them your pics from the first post. I'll PM you my number now, as soon as I hear anything I'll let you know.

Matthew,
There has been a few supersessions on this part as follows”¦

3151 231 031 3151 231 031 3151 231 031
As you can see, the only part that changed in the kit was the pressure plate, so parts in the kit are correct.
How long after he had fitted clutch did the damage get done?
Mick/Siti,
What are your thoughts on this issue?
I’ve attached 2 more pics of damage done to pressure plate.
I believe that something may have caused the strap to come loose and cut its way through gearbox.

Unfortunately i think they will dig their heels in and give the usual disclaimer that any part manufacturer will, and that their part is only guaranteed for use on the intended application, and that by fitting to a non standard flywheel on a non standard engine / flywheel combination with a non standard gearbox will void any warrantee.
Very unusual for a strap to break without serious abuse, and there looks like more damage to the clutch cover than you would expect from some aluminium swarf floating about. the cover itself touching at any point could have been enough of a shock to snap the strap

Those straps are always the weak point, when you order a high performance clutch kit those are beefed up to take the extra shock.
A very strange failure especially when the pressure plate was not used in anger.

Fair play to Matt.
Mick hows your gearbox?
I ask because I have a box that was fitted to a m42 318i touring here.
Was mated to a 4.10 diff which, though it ran well, made the car rev highly.
Was believed to come from another model BMW, though no one on here
could positively ID it.
Yours for nantes if you want it and arrange a courier/pick up.

Also recently bought a new Sachs E30 325 Clutch Kit for impending 318is-M52 conversion (also using M42 gearbox)...
Thought i'd better look into it in this thread after Mick mentioned it the other day in a message.
The part numbers on mine match the ones in the pic meatball82 posted...
3082 001 454
1849 001 012
..Does this mean i have the wrong clutch too? Can't read the part number on the box :/
EDIT: Worth mentioning, mine came from an ebay store, not ECP.

i wouldn't worry too much Andy, mine seems to be a one off fail .
when you get the box fitted turn the 22m nut on the crank with no spark plugs in and you will hear if it's catching anything.this is what i'll be doing when i source another engine

Once it's all clarified I'll make a part numbers table for the Wiki so that people know what they ought to be buying, and what they ought to receive. Good to know 325e clutches are the same as 325i.

That'd be a good idea Grrrmachine.
Ah Mick, fully feel for you pal, such a run of bad luck
I'll try what you suggested though when i get the box mated up, make sure nothing's catching. Will be very cautious!!

It's been a while since I built up my M50 conversion, but I became bezzy mates with the staff at my local GSF....they could not do enough to help me with just this type of issue.
Since Matt has joined us,I have used his offered services several times and have found his approach to be first class, but even this has not tempted me to the recently opened ECP in Lincoln!
I've only scanned the thread,Mick, but what's the problem that worries you regarding the M52,please?

So are the clutch kits for an M20 325i that ECP supply the correct ones?

Mine also has a ECP sticker over the original Sachs sticker. The ECP sticker reads:

The numbers on the parts themselves:

Friction disc: 1878005615

Are the part numbers of the new clutch the same as before? Also does the new one have an ECP sticker over the Sachs one as before as well?
