Fess up Paul, the caravan did not go the pearly gates of Billing Aquadrome in the sky due to structural issues it was because it was deemed a biohazard and confiscated by the operation Yewtree feds ! :(

The e30 M3 is a legendry motor vehicle with much history and quality.

It should not really be compared to cars of this era as the technology used back then has moved miles apart from good to much better.

anybody know the 1/4 mile times for a totally standard stock e30 m3?

The M52 we all have to understand has 2 more cylinders and has greater yet better technology used with the build. a stronger yet more powerful engine which in turn will always have the upper hand to an S14 engine if trying to compare performance.

I presume the M52 will be better for long motorway cruising with the added better mpg, driving hard in town and on track.

However i am certain doing all that with an M3 the fun factor shoots through the roof, the enjoyment it gives you makes you forget about the M52;s power advantage.

The M52 has no power advantage, nor is it a stronger engine and I can assure you it's no where near as economical.

I think people should really get these anecdotal ideals of the M52 out of their head, it's a cheap mass produced engine that has no scope for power other than forced induction.

Demlotcrew - My knowledge about the S14 engine is rather minimal and i am still learnign about it all as with the M52.

Why is it that the S14 is the better engine in this instance against the M52?

Both engines were mass produced the S14 more predominantly for the racing industry i.e. rally and so on

the M52 was mass produced for your general market non racing.

Surely the 6 cylinder has more power grunt and many tuning options.

The 4 cylinder i presume has a little less grunt however a more is quicker to rev to the limits.

I just would have thought that any and most 6 cylinder due to its engineering would have naturally been more powerful then a 4 cylinder engine.

I read up somewhere a revy engine is not always a fast engine. Could this be the case in with the S14 VS M52?

The number of cylinders has little to do with power.

In fact, given the same capacity, a four cylinder engine will often make more power because it will need fewer crank bearings to support the extra cylinders, and will have less frictional loss from the cylinders, less valve springs to opperate, less rotating mass etc
cheers,

since my years in driving i must admit every 4 cylinder car i have driven since 1985 till now to compare with the 6 cylinder cars have to date has always been much smoother.

the overall drive quality and power you feel under the foot on the pedal the 6 cylinder for me has always been like beasty and some have been slugish but all have felt much more powerful then every 4 cylinder cars i have driven.

I may have driven the wrong 4 Cylinder cars in my time i do not know.

Only if BMW could bring back an E30 M3 anniversary edition keeping the shell and interior set up with the added new technology of engine and drive train.. this im sure would be sex on wheels

Was the e30 m3 not the first NA bmw engine to hit the 100 BHP per litre ( i know not all quite made that figure)? Calculated that way compare the M52's 2.8ltr against its 193BHP then you'll see the pedigree!

I wonder what the solutions are, for 7.5k I would need a factory solution considering you could buy a few extra sports for that money

5.5k has built an s50 e36 compact for track use with most of the labor paid for in bmw parts.
7.5k would only maybe cover an s54 conversion if you had the car and the s54 already.
Putting these motors into cars they were not intended for and doing it to any decent standard is expensive.

I've seen sooo many engine conversions and some of the work I've seen is horrible.

I'm sure pacer will back me up as he's seen some work from a lad from around here.

People don't realise the expensive and time it takes to do this properly.

This is where expensive dreams come true with the help of you all here on the zone. Both these beasty straigh 6 engines suit and look well at home in the bays.

Its been discussed a lot, these engines are coming down in price a bit but I would say around 6k mark if you did the majority of it yourself, thats s50 not sure about s54 but probably not a lot more, again this is doing the work yourself.

If I was doing this conversion now, I would skip the S50 and fit the S54. But I can say the S54 install is significantly more expensive.
