That does look bloody awful I'm afraid.George wrote:This stereo is many thanks but 'oem look' is not one of them!bmw9818 wrote:lol not mine random pic pulled from google, diable wrote: Is that fitted into your aeroplane?
heres mine,
blue light is fine, its one of the best stereos ive had, and ive pretty much had em all, for the price, quality and the oem look this is the best imo, the mic fits in perfectly above in the empty slots as well,
(imvho of course)
It's all about havig something that looks period while giving fair sound quality in my book. Kos's head unit is a good compromise but for me it's too modern.
Barrys Memphis set up is probably the best I've yet to see and for what it is, you'd go a long way to better the sound quality using some £70 quid box of shite from Halford which would wreck the look of the dash.
Yes ICE has moved on over the year but then no one can say high end audio from the 80's can't sound as good today. Thats why a true audiophile of House Hifi will stil be using 80's B&W DM110i speakers, a Cyrus 1 amp etc.
You have to remember, those of us that bought the gear back in the day, thought nothing of handing 100 x £10 pound notes over for a set up!

The Blapunkt in the touring:

It works well but is only cassette in which means it'll go in the bin/ebay.
The cab has a Sony:

Doesn't f'king work though...along with most of the interior electrics...this'll be fun to fault find.

For under £100, you can search out the Blaupunkt Memphis/Woodstock, and maintain the 80's look in your car. Modern units look great in modern cars, but its E30 period only for me. I have a BMW spares list for 1988 which lists the SQR88 as an £1100 extra on your car. Big plus on the SQR88 is the fron panel input jack for your iPod etc. I prefer to play my selection of cassettes of Capital Radio from the 80's!

Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

Ive got an oldish becker mexico in mine.
When i pulled out the columbine massacre of a glitzy alpine and threw the becker in, sound quality was immediately superior.
Becker all the way. Fuck flashy, tacky-buttoned jap ballbag headunits

Agreed. E36 OEM fit is a decent match for the E30 interior imo.G-Bear wrote:Thats a Beauty..Blitz wrote:I've got a Becker/BMW Bavaria C Professional RDS but need to find the separate tuner to go with it.

I've got an original Pioneer tape player in my car, the one it rolled out of dealers with.
Perfect orange match to the dials; I mean perfect. The sound quality is not too bad either, it's OK for me personally.
Best thing, it's the pull out type, so you can remove the whole unit in 1 second, and refit in 1 second.
I would never change it, I love the way it looks!

Yep, the BEQ S2 is the swan neck bad boy.E30BeemerLad wrote:Is that the "swan neck" EQ Barry?

Also got this Blaupunkt EQ BEA 108E

And these are the amps to go in,
BQA160 four channel

BSA160 two channel

And the amp in there at the moment is the BQA80
.At some point the Sport is going in the workshop for some extensive work which will include redoing the sound system.

I listen to loads of 80's and electronic music anyway so it's bound to sound 'right' isn't it?

Nice quality bit of kit but no aux in.
The 7909 is the one to have but they go for silly money like £400+!

Not sure what the cost of the BQA80 was but the BQA107 was £156 in 1990.polsta wrote:the bqa80 is the amp ive got, remember your thread on all and inspired me, ive not heard mine yet/ever set it up, so cant comment on the sound, is it a decent sound and the unit make a good unit ? how much that and the amp of cost back then would it of been one of the best around ?

That's kind of thing I had been looking at. The more I think about it though, the more the aux feature appeals to me so would need some guidance as to which units had them!bss325i wrote:This was in my Sport from new coupled with a pair of Alpine two ways in the front foot wells.MattTheHat325 wrote:I've been looking into high end 80's equipment lately for my jetta, does anyone have any experience with the Alpine gear, 7390m etc? I've just fitted a NOS Fischer cassette holder in my jetta, and although it looks the part, you don't get that much music on 5 cassettes compared to the 400+ tracks I have on my iPod!
Speakers I'm not so worried about as long as they're hidden, I would have thought 25 year old speakers wouldn't hold up as well as a head unit/amp or am I wrong?

i think if you search the web long and hard enough, there is a way of using the cd input on some of the alpines to create and aux in/ipod in.MattTheHat325 wrote:That's kind of thing I had been looking at. One of my plans was to use one of the later E36 headunits to keep the OEM look but use the CD autochanger input as an AUX in.pukar wrote:

Don't get what everyone's clamouring on about. Most of these old aftermarket units look just as bad as the modern ones. The Blaupunkt ones are pretty oem, and the alpine ones don't look too bad but they're still over crowded and fussy. Those Becker ones look nice but the price and rareity of them seem to repel my tastes.
Over this thread, the best idea seems to of been using the OEM E36 unit and using the CD multichanger plug to use an aux lead, but it's hardly retro.
I would have this however. But not at that price

thats why i went with the memphis, looks smart and oem period, and a front aux- so can have the ipod in glove box hidden away , and when i want the music just pull the aux cable from glove box and have all that music (mainly on longer drives) , when finished put the lead back, best of both worlds, and stil have a selection of tapes also
