This batch are going for Ԛ£58 delivered. It was originally Ԛ£55, but some of the materials went up :(

At this rate I don't think there will be a problem with having some left over

I hope anyone that let's me down and leaves me out of pocket is happy with themselves. I really enjoyed spending time and money on this project..

Ian.

Good god come on lads dig deep and pay up, Ian's put a lot of money and effort into this for our benefit so please don't leave him out of pocket for christmas :x

If this is how you treat a fellow long standing zoner that organises a group buy how do we expect to ever get others to do the same ?.

If you put your name down please pay up, I'm as skint as a beggar after buying all the chrimbo pressies and now buying this as well and my missus will have my nuts on a skewer for it but I still payed up and you should do the same :soap:

Cheers,

When I get the lump out of the other iS and clean up the bay I'm thinking of an E36 rack conversion, so you've probably got another sale here...

Slightly off topic I know, but has anyone actually done the rack conversion on an M42/M40?

And also, are the E36 racks different ratios, depending on the donor car?

Cheers in advance.

Hi Omi,

Thanks.

I don't think anyone has ever done one on an M40/42 yet. I believe some of this batch of pipes were going to be tried on one of these. I left the pipe longer to make sure there was plenty of length for use in these conversions, but don't know if there will be any clearance issues with the M40/42 exhaust manifold and the steering joint.

Most E36 racks are 3.4 turns lock to lock. The only one that's different is the original 3L M3. This was 3.2 turns. To be honest, the standard 3.4 turn rack is a massive improvement over the standard E30 rack, so I would not break your neck looking for a 3L M3 one. It's alleged that the Z3 rack is has fewer turns lock to lock, but I think this may be due to reduced travel rather than a higher ratio. It's something I keep meaning to look into, but never quite get around to :D

Ian

I'm seriously interested as I think that my standard Sport is almost perfect apart from the tiller (and the suspension; and the brakes, and the power.... ). It's like steering an oceanliner.

I don't have an E36 rack just yet though and definitely don't have the time or space to do the conversion myself. Any idea how much a savvy mech would charge for this sort of work? I suppose it's best done with the engine out....

Best go and find suitable engine then... winkeye

It's hard to know how much a garage would charge for this sort of job. Anything a little non standard is going to have most places running a mile.

Fitting the rack itself is not any harder than fitting a standard E30 rack, and the engine does not have to come out to do it (obviously easier to do if it is). Modifying the steering coupling is a bit more work, but as long as the spacer is already made up, it's just a simple nuts 'n' bolts job.

Hooking up the hydraulics is normally the hardest bit of the conversion because none of the standard E30 pipes will fit. If you have one of my custom pipes it's simple though :D

So, how much would *you* charge to do it? winkeye

I am in the South East you know....

Seriously though, if having one of your custom pipes will make this easier, I'm all but sold. Just gotta get a cheap E36 rack.

Ebay then......
