the engines "numbers" do not quite do the donk justice.

Are there any decent e46 forums in the uk to keep an eye open on for a crank? I know of the e46 zone but are there anymore?

Sweet! Have you been able to do much work on your engine this weekend chap? I'm off until the 4th now so i might pop over at some point. I've just PM'd dan about this too actually (and his m52b28 head he's got :o: )
I've done some calculating and using 85mm m44 pistons i should get 3050cc, with m30 pistons (86mm but im really unsure if any of this will work :chuckle:) i should get 3123cc. The easiest way to get 3.2 appears to be using the american s52 pistons but they seem to go for a rather large price...

edit: by the sounds of it the m30 + m44 might not be suitable pistons.

Management side im thinking m52 loom with m52b28 ecu, m3 injectors and maf. This could though - all be completely wrong :chuckle:

Oh and why not use S50B32 pistons. I think they are bigger than 86mm no?

What would be the best management for a b32? Would an m52b28 loom and ecu remapped for a 3.2 (if that is possible?) or would an m52 loom with an s52b32 ecu be better?

Live map M52B28 would be best. M52 management runs Dan's 3.0lt track car without being mapped. That is standard everything apart from crank and c/r I think. 235bhp. Not sure what he is doing about management but I know it's getting S52 cams

Thanks for that dezzy. Im just thinking that an s52 ecu would be more capable of running a 3.2, i'd use a 328i ecu for a 3.0 though becuase i know its capable.

As far as I remember, the pin height on m52b28 and m54b30 pistons is different, but iirc block height is the same, so I think you do need the b30 pistons with the b30 crank really unless you're going to skim the block, then you have bolts and timing chain tension and stuff to worry about getting right, not to mention getting the cases to fit properly. the m54b30 pistons have an extremely low pin height. m43 pistons pin height would be pretty wrong at a guess, plus would need new valve reliefs as they're from an 8v. so prob not a good idea. m44 pistons are 85mm and have valve reliefs in the right place, relatively low pin height too.
To get towards 3.2l you'd need some pretty big, circa s50 diameter (86/86.6) pistons (although s50 ones would prob give low CR with an m5x head at a guess).

Cheers bud. Im going to get the impression that this will cost me a few quid... s52 pistons + cams, new timing chain, sprockets + guides, loom + ecu, crank, etc etc. Oh well, it will be a long term project anyway :)

What clutch setup are you using for your 3.0ltr too? Im pretty sure that dans 3.0ltr wasn't coping too well with the m20 clutch?

Dan has a standard new shacks which is ok onw its bedded in iirc.

I have a paddle clutch but its a solid plate type. This may need changing if its too harsh

Clutch will be fine, as long as its a good'n :)

S52 uses a different loom BTW, lots of faffing thats not needed

My 3 litre needs remapping to get the best from it, its runs well but you can tell its gagging for more :D

Ahhh, I thought that considering the s52 engine is based on an m50 it would have your average pesant loom aswell. Cheers dan :D
S50b32 loom and ECU would be no use either I would presume
