2.5 sport with 2.7 bottome end , what does this mean ??

Aha this sounds similar to what was said to me recently.I have a m tech 1 sport for 8 years and bought it from a friend who got it from the dealers when it was 1 year old, the car was totally original and un molested until i did an s50 conversion earlier this year.I recently sold the m20 engine to a friend and he said he checked the engine number and that number was a 2.7 engine number. now im 100% sure it was the original engine from the factory and i think it was just a 2.5 as ive had a few 325i,s and it was not noticably faster than any of the others,my mate quizzed me about it several times and insistes that the engine number is a 2.7 and maybe its not the engine that it left the factory with.we came to no conclusion me insiting its original lump and a 325i,n him not so sure, maybe someone else could shead some light on it!
